30 Days of Books - Day 7

Day 07 - Least favorite plot device employed by way too many books you actually enjoyed otherwise

In far too many books, I come across the irritating plot device of the Woman With Issues, or in other words, the author who, in an attempt to make their character believable and realistic, instead makes her annoying and self-destructive. Either that or ignorant and stubborn. I'm talking about the Anita Blakes, the Sookie Stackhouses, the Liraels, the Buffys (okay that's not a book I know). It's okay to have characters like that but not as your main character if you want to reader to empathise with them.

Sometimes these type of characters act fine and for the most part, I love the books that they are in. But when an author keeps pushing the willfully ignorant, stubborn or self-destructive character in order to further the plot or (as is often the case) put off some kind of revelation that should have happened chapters if not books ago, it makes me want to throw said book at the wall.

Realism doesn't necessarily equal utter twat.
