Two weeks ago, Lord Branwyn and I drove out to the Black River Landing in Lorain to see replicas of two of Columbus' ships then went to the Cuyahoga County Fair in Berea.
The"Little Free Library" at the landing was the first that I have seen around here.
The ships are replicas of the Nina and Pinta. The volunteer crew must make at least a one month commitment, though they often stay longer.
A navigational aid that could double as a cribbage board.
The ceiling under the aft deck (aftercastle?) was less than 6 feet high. Very cozy. As much as possible, they used period techniques and materials in the construction of the Nina replica ship.
The crews' quarters down below. It seemed a little creepy to photograph someone's bedroom so I asked one of the crew for permission. In Columbus' day, the hold would have been used for cargo, and the crew would have slept on the deck.
The aft deck on the replica Pinta is roomier because it was built to take tourists for daysails.
The Black River.
The center section of the bridge swings up to let ships pass through.
There aren't many farms left in our county, but the traditional agricultural fair is still held each August in Berea. This year, I entered the home canning competition and won second prize for sweet pickles! The jar on the right is mine. Along with the $2 prize for second place, I received the judges' comment sheet which I was very happy to get.
The first prize winner in the "fairy garden" competition.
All of the fairy gardens. The square panel provided solar power to a toy train.
Something I would never have expected to see entered in the county fair, lol. We didn't recognize the name of the entrant though it was someone local.
An awesome Hello Kitty quilt.
That red, white and blue one on the right just stopped me in my tracks.
Eee! Baby goats! There were also exhibits of sheep, rabbits, cavies, draft horses and cows. Sadly, my camera batteries ran out before we got to the Cow Palace.
I am sure that Spider Girl, Exorcist Girl, and Radium Skin Girl are part of the Marvel Universe.
No, these aren't the "World's Strangest People." Just go to Walmart on a Friday night.
We didn't get to see kids rolling around in the "giant human hampster balls". Maybe next year. A surprising number of the rides required some level of physical ability, like climbing a rock wall or going down the giant slide.
Horrifyingly large zucchini.
This county may not have many farmers, but the rose gardeners showed up in force.
On the way out, we stopped for frozen custard. Chocolate, vanilla, OR twist (I got twist). For non-Clevelanders, Euclid Beach was a beloved amusement park that has been gone for years, but its frozen custard lives on.
