[screened to Edward Elric and Pharaun Mizzrym//unhackable]Hypothetical question. Something bad's coming, we all know that. It's probably the Entropi coming to destroy us and the world and all of everything, and everybody's in a tizzy getting ready to fight them. ...Question is this. If you had a possible means of escaping back to where you ( Read more... )

Any sensible person would jump at the chance.

Then again, I never claimed to be sensible. In any case I'm rather attached to my home, and I'd just as soon see that the Entropi didn't have a chance to do to it what they'd done to this world.

You think the best chance to stop the Entropi is here, with just a handful of us, instead of, say, warning our home worlds of the danger? Perhaps allowing them to be ready and waiting before the Entropi get there?

You're forgetting one crucial detail, Mistress Faye:

How likely are the people on your home world to believe that they're in danger from life-draining balls of light from an alternate universe?

...Yeah, I know. They'd call us crazy and go back to their lives. I mean, I'm no one important, why would anyone listen to me?

I guess I just... I can't believe we're the best they've got. This is their plan to save the world? Their plan sucks!

...But I guess I'm just projecting my own feelings of uselessness. I can't do anything except sit and wait for them to come and kill me... I'm not doing any good here! You at least can help fight back.

Well, the point is moot anyway. It's much to late for clever escape plans.

...You ever talk to Gaz about sending your energy-draining spell through a barrier?

You don't think some of our friends with more psychoses than sense might try something while we're busy with the Entropi? Never mind that you're the only one who actually bothered to try digging out in the first place.

Things have been coming up; we never did get the opportunity to try.

...Only one that we know of, anyway... but I'd like to think I'm special~. ...But if the Entropi attack is anything like that hallucination the Keepers gave us... I doubt even the psychos are going to want to break cover.

Hmm. ...Well, we're running out of time.

The problem there is that you're considering them from the viewpoint of someone at least moderately sane.

I know, I know. If we're actually going to be attacked by more than one this time, though, it might be more expedient not to bother - take out more of them that way.

Well, let them get themselves killed, then. Not our problem, is it?

Good point, we never really figured out how to make that work for more than one at a time, did we? ...Out of curiosity, have you got a plan, or any ideas even, for how to defeat them?

That's where the people who can't fight the Entropi directly come in - those of us who can are going to be busy with them, aren't we?

None that are likely to survive contact with the enemy beyond "throw all the negative energy I can at them," I'm afraid.

I suppose. ...You seem so convinced they're going to be causing trouble, and that there's any trouble to cause.

How deeply reassuring. ...Well. Good luck. ...That's pretty much all I've got to contribute, so you're welcome to it.

It helps to expect the worst - makes life more of a series of pleasant surprises.

Plans are for people who can't deal with chaos, and can count on their enemies to do exactly what they expect. But thank you.

...That is the most optimistic take on pessimism I've ever heard of~.

Heh. I was never much of one for making plans before I got here. Reactive, not proactive, you know? Plotting all the time I feel like a fish out of water. ...I guess... sitting here staring at a wall, the wall's not doing anything I can react to, and staring gets old real fast. Puzzling out how to get past the wall becomes all that's left.

I suppose we simply have different outlooks.

Of course. I suppose that accounts for the fact that I never could beat Master Argith at sava...

No, actually I agree with you. It just occurred to me as funny, just then. ...My head's in a weird place right now.

I'm not surprised. That sort of thing can happen in situations like this.
