Title: Foot In Mouth
Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Daniel/Charlotte
Rating: PG
Warnings: Season 4.
Summary: Charlotte regrets her words and is haunted by the fact that she might not be good enough for Daniel.
Table/Prompt: Hurt&Comfort/Haunted
A/N: Written for mission_insane. Not my best work, by far, just a short little ficlet typed up in a moment of fangirlyness. So if it's not entirely coherant...you know why. XD

"See, Dan, I told you. They're convinced we're trying to kill them...might as well keep playing the part."

She knows the moment she's said too much. But the words come out of her mouth before she's able to stop them. She has the bad habit of speaking first, thinking afterwards. Growing up in the environment she has, that sort of thing often helped get her out of precarious predicaments. Here, it just manages to get her into trouble. And bothers Daniel. She wasn't sure which one concerned her more.

"Dammit, Charlotte." He sounds more tired than angry. Charlotte knows he's frustrated with her. Understandably so. "That--your attitude, your very bad attitude is exactly why they don't trust us."

She stares at him because she can't think of anything to say. No witty retorts come to mind...She simply blanks. Charlotte doesn't care what anyone thinks about her, nor does she care if anyone likes her. But there's one exception to that. One twitchy, annoyingly intelligent exception. It's quite problematic, she thinks. But what's she to do about it?

Would she want to do anything about it at all?

"Come on." His voice is almost entreating.

He turns back to Juliet, and Charlotte lets her eyes drop away from him. She'd held his gaze before because to do otherwise would be to show how she truly felt--lower than dirt at the moment. It would show how much she longs for him to see her as some holier-than-thou woman even though she's far from that. She wants him to respect her, at the very least. Though, she reflects, she doesn't suppose that she's all that deserving of said respect. Not with the way she's been behaving lately.

She continues to say nothing. Not because she doesn't want to (oh, she has a few choice words to spit back at him by this point thanks to her brain having a moment to recover since he wasn't looking at her anymore), but because she can't. She won't. Because he's her weakness and as much as she wished that it wasn't so, she has a difficult time standing up to him--of all people. She knows she cares about him--he seems like the type who needs people to care for him--but she's not sure if he wants her to care for him. She's not afraid of rejection, except from him. It's ridiculous, really, and makes no sense. Then again, Life hasn't been all that logical as of late anyway.

Charlotte knows that he'll apologize to her later. He won't be able to help himself. He cares too much. About others and their opinions, about what's going to happen, about everything really. She briefly wonders if he cares about her, too, but dismisses the thought. Of course he cares...as a friend, anyway. Though she doesn't always feel deserving of their friendship, of the kindness he shows her despite her often foul attitude.

All these thoughts and more run through Charlotte's head in the span of a few seconds. And then they're on the move again, headed to God only knows where.

They walk and as they do, she's haunted by the thought that she's probably not good enough for him. Definitely not good for him. After all, he's so good and pure and she's--what is she?

The answer appears in her mind before she can stop it: a woman who's deluding herself.
