On exercise

So yesterday, five of us went up the Grouse Grind, which is one of the popular tourist spots in Vancouver.  Basically, you spend one day of your vacation climbing up a series of steps (with a few tiny rock faces here and there for you to practice semi-rock-climbing or what I did, spidermanning it up ^_^) up a mountain.  Average time is about an hour and a half.  Don't ask how long it took three of us.  I'm just really, really glad I made it---seriously, one-half of the first quarter up I was considering hiking back down and taking the gondola up.  And that was within the first thirty minutes.

Still, I think it really drove home the point that I am obviously very out of shape, though I'm not that fat, er, chubby.   And for some reason, now I really really want to do it again and do it in less time than before.

So now I'm cruising gyms and checking to see what I can do to get into shape.  The main problem is that all gyms require some time commitment or high monthly fees.  On top of it, since I don't drive, it's a hassle trying to locate one easily accessible and still open in the times I'm looking for.

I'm also thinking I need to get into doing more activities.  I used to think I'll wait until I'm buffed up to do this-and-that, but at this rate, I'll be old before I'm buffed up.  So you know what, I'll live it up a little and be daring.  It's going to be very difficult to stop staring at all the uberslim, uberpretty people, but one of the habits that I definitely need to break is the habit of comparing myself to the most fit, most attractive person in the room.  It's massively self-destructive.

Anyway, I'm really hoping to get into a horseback riding class.  I love horseback riding, but am a bit leery of the whole tacking-the-horse thing.  They're not going to make me clean up a stall, are they?  I can just imagine whacking myself with a very manure-y shovel doing that...

Also, am planning on doing rock-climbing.  After the Grind, I'd probably die doing it and it's intimidating thinking about it now considering how bad I'm out of it, but you know, who knows, one of the cute guys there may motivate me enough to keep doing it.   ^_^
