Writing mysteries

I'm finding it much, much more difficult writing gen than the other stuff I used to write before.  Mainly because before I concentrated on relationships and angst and melodrama.  Now with gen, it seems to be all about plot and action and movement.

So I want to write mystery fics in my fave fandoms.  But where should I start?  Do I come up with the victim, the motive, the method, and the perpetrator first?  Or should I just freewrite and see what happens?

I have to admit that there's several crime stories that I really don't have the stomach to write---things involving children and serial killers, especially.  But these, especially the serial killers bit, seem to be highly favored.  I frankly don't know how people can do it since for me, writing means in part getting into their skins or at least knowing enough to make something plausible and well, reading up case studies on serial killers would likely give me nightmares forever...

Working-wise, I'm still looking for a job.  I'm hoping to get into a couple of temp agencies, though I'm also trying to apply to certain companies.  I have to admit I haven't been hardworking or highly-motivated.  Job-hunting is just the absolute pits.
