A member of our community died this week. I can’t say that I knew her but she has made me think quite a bit this week.

She was dying of cancer and knew it, so she had time to get her affairs in order and have a say in what would happen to her after she died.

She did not want to be embalmed…they did not use a funeral home in any way as a matter of fact. Her husband made her casket, which was very nice by the way…not ornate at all but quite lovely. How difficult it must have been to craft that coffin. Knowing you will soon put your wife into it way before you would have wanted. I also think it must have been a good way to keep his mind and body occupied while waiting for the inevitable.

According to ND law she had to be buried within 48 hours since she was not embalmed. Small towns and all, there was a lot of talk about how weird it was to go this route. I have to admit I thought so too, at first. But really, isn’t it odd that we pump ourselves full of chemicals so people can stand over us 5 days after we die and say (how good) or (how bad) we look?
