Ugly Betty Rundown

'Cause my roommate was working and couldn't watch with me, so I need to articulate this somewhere...

I knew something had to go wrong with the Sofia situation.  Mostly because if Betty's working at a magazine where everyone loves themselves and not their looks and Daniel's happy and in a stable relatioship we don't have much of a show.  Also I didn't think Salma Hayek was going to be a regular character.  So I knew something would send her back to Mode it just had to.  But I'll be honest, I didn't see it playing out the way it did.  And as much as it hurt, I love it.  Because this whole plotline accomplishes several delightful things:

Not all "ugly" people are nice.  They anti-Betty working at MYW did that.

Sofia shows us that not all women/minorities are hapless victims.  First, I have to say, I love that the race issue is never directly addressed on this show.  Sure it's occasionally there in the subtext, but most of the divisions have a lot more to do with class than skin color and they don't try to beat you over the head with any of it.  But particularly in light of Wilhemina getting her heart broken I like us being reminded that some women prefer to do the heart breaking.

It also puts a more sympathetic spin on Daniel.  Not only because of what he's been through, but we get reminded that while he broke a lot of hearts it was generally through carelessness and not deliberate scheming.

I also enjoy the immigration subplot.  It's nice to see a show deal with it in a non-afterschool special kind of way.

Hmm... okay, I thought I had a lot more to say on this than I do... It's time for coffee.
