I will begin by saying this was a good placeholder until "Breaking Dawn Pt. 2". (That didn't run with the trailers, though...)
But if you watched the original series, this is WAY different. They set it in '72 (Which is after the series ended) and a great thing personally, as I love when people make fun of the '70s. (Keep in mind the only version I saw in its entirety was the '90s version...so I'll be referencing that...)
Firstly, we all know the whole story about Barnabas, except Josette didn't fling herself off the cliff after finding out he was a vampire, it was well before he became one...and Angelique was pulling the strings. He flings himself off the cliff, but survives...and is THEN turned into a vampire. All because of Angelique being jealous. (The series had Angelique as Josette's handmaiden...which made her even MORE upset over Barnabas and Josette in love.)
Angelique, however, escaped death. She's been existing in some form or another in Collinsport for nearly 200 years. And she's the wealthiest person in town, heading up the Angelbay seafood company. Which drove the Collins Cannery out of business, but their newfound 'cousin' inspires the family to reopen. (And uses his hypnotic powers to steal away Angelbay's main fishing captain, played by Christopher Lee. :) )
Victoria Winters (Or Veronica, as a bunch of hippies call her) is actually Maggie Evans. She was a separate character who was a psychic. In this case, poor Maggie's family thought her visions of Josette's ghost were reason to throw her into an institution and be subjected to electrode-shock therapy. She later escaped and found an ad asking for a governess to homeschool David Collins. Thus, she hops a train* to Collinsport (Where she gets her alias from a poster advertising skiing in Victoria, BC) and gets the job...and runs into Josette's ghost haunting Collinwood Manor.
Elizabeth is still the rock in this family, but has a fondness for macrame. In fact, she's filled one secret room in her house with her creations and rocks a set of macrame owl earrings. :)
Her brother Roger...douche. Treats his poor son like he doesn't exist. And the poor kid doesn't have his mom...in physical form. But he still communicates with her spirit, which led to them hiring Dr. Hoffman. The series, however, he left his wife in a sanitarium back in the UK, and David uses some voodoo to get back at dad...while he's boning Maggie. David here is a little more tame. In the show, he would leave rats and spiders around that family members would discover, here he shows up in a sheet ala "Halloween"...and his dad scolds him for cutting holes in the sheets. Most of the time, he likes to play with his toy dinosaurs.
Carolyn is MAJORLY different. In the TV series, she was a bit older and had a boyfriend. And to be expected, she didn't get along with her mom all that much. Here, she's 15 and wants to run off to NY (Her mom totally puts her foot down on that), and loves rock music. Even suggesting getting Alice Cooper to perform at their big party. :) However, she's another victim of Angelique's wrongdoings...which is all I'm saying here.
Dr. Hoffman is a HUGE lush. She does try to help Barnabas get back to being human, but something happens that throws that off course... (Also, very naughty scene involving her and Barnabas... :P )
And another big lush is Willie Loomis. In the TV show, he wasn't bright and was convinced there was treasure buried in the house...but that turned out to be Barnabas, who makes him his manservant. Well, this one he's just pretty damn drunk out in the yard when Barnabas shows up...
*Caught a movie mistake-the exterior shots of the train have the NEW Amtrak logo. Interior had the old logo.
In short, the end is very WTF, but if you love when old TV shows are intentionally funny, then check it out. :)
