the teacher back in class

well, well, well. saturday was a long day. i was up at 4am finishing an assignment for my class at saint mary's. i'm required to attend their monthly saturday seminars for my beginning teacher support program. as a bonus, i paid $600 for 6 easy graduate credits that'll help me to climb the pay scale. plus, these seminars will clear my credential, which is a GOOD thing.

each seminar, we have a different topic. last month, erin gruwell -- author of the freedom writer's diary was the keynote speaker. i read her book and had her sign my book the last time i saw her speak. *love* her and want to be a good teacher like her. last saturday, the focus was technology. two of the breakout sessions were being given by people i knew from working at kqed. i picked the lesser of two evils -- the flaky video production teacher. he's *such* a film guy -- greasy hair, talks too fast, thinks in frames. at kqed i edited his lesson plans to fit a template for a grant we had. i saw *my* masterpieces in his handouts and had to plug kqed, even though neither of us work with them anymore.

so, our mission: create an idea, script, storyboard and film. the class after us worked a little on video editing. the brainstorming session was *so* much fun. at 9am, we were all laughing so hard. after the name slim was suggested for the main male character and kim for the main female character, i suggested slim was shady and the teacher was dr. dre. did i mention how much fun we had? i also challenged the teacher for his boy meets girl storyline. i asked why can't it be two boys or two girls? i later learned one of the actors is gay, and i'm certain he wasn't the only one is class who was. i happily volunteered for my role... check it out.
