a rant, a resolution, and a song!

~So, a while back, the History Channel did a 6-part, 12-hour-long series called AMERICA: THE STORY OF US which is kind of a ridiculous name, but I like history and lately I've become a lot more fond of American history, so I meant to watch and/or record it but I always ended up missing it.  But then I learned that they were showing the entire thing today, so I dutifully set up a timed recording.  If you leave my TV off for over an hour, it will automatically resort back to a welcome screen when you turn it on again.  Unfortunately it still does this if you're recording something, which I found out the hard way once by recording four hours of a screen that said WELCOME TO DISH NETWORK: PRESS SELECT TO CONTINUE.  But I thought I could get around that by leaving the TV on--which technically I can--except I didn't want to waste a lot of energy, so I turned the screen part off while still leaving the TV itself on.  But it still resorted back to that welcome screen, and now I've got SIX hours of WELCOME TO DISH NETWORK: PRESS SELECT TO CONTINUE when I should have gotten six hours of the discovery of America by a Europeans to halfway through the Civil War.  *pouts a LOT*  THIS IS REALLY UPSETTING TO ME AS AN AMERICAN, OKAY???

~I should watch 1776 to cheer me up. *perks up a little*

~In more, um, piratical news (idek), I am going to inspire myself to make further progress on pirate!newsies by watching Pirates of the Penzance, which I haven't seen in years, not least because we still have it on VHS.  But it's an awesome movie/musical/play that's hilarious and perfect and basically everything I want my pirate!newsies to be but sometimes have trouble making them into--lovable rogues who are still pirates and do piratical things but are kind-hearted and fun and protagonists.  (My other main influence for pirate!newsies are these awesome (well, the first one was awesome, at least) tween/teen books called Piratica about a girl who's a pirate captain, which are very girl-power-y and I adore the main ship with all my being, and by "influenced by" I pretty much mean "pirate!newsies is a fusion with", so I should mention that at some point in the author's notes or something, otherwise I am a massive plot!thief).

~For some unknown reason I have a little song they used to teach to us in, like, preschool through second grade, right along with America the Beautiful and our state song which I don't recall a single word of, stuck in my head.  It goes like this:

My home's in Montana, I wear a bandana
My spurs are of silver, my pony is grey
When ridin' the ranges, my luck never changes
My feet in my stirrups, I gallop away.

...what?  You never learned state-pride cowboy songs when you were in kindergarten?  Psh.

newsies owns my soul, pirate!newsies ftw, argh!
