Daiki felt himself floating in an ocean of darkness. He could hear people talking, he could hear people crying, but he could not see who it was. He tried reaching out but his voice could not reach them. He extended his hand, trying to reach out, but the darkness just swallowed him over and over again.
‘Where am I? Why am I-...” Daiki gasped, clutching his head in pain. He started having flashback, he remembered now. Ryutaro and him, they were in his car and they were on their way to the movies. Then, Daiki saw the white light from a truck heading their way in full speed. After that, he saw nothing.
The young man dropped to the ground. ‘Am I dead?’ he thought.
“No you’re not,” a melodious voice said from the darkness.
Daiki’s eyes widened in surprise, “W-Who’s there?”
There was a giggle of reply. When he stood up, there was a swirl of light in front of him, and a girl with shoulder-length hair appeared. Confused, Daiki asked, “Who are you?”
“Who I am is not important,” she grinned. “Getting you back is what important.”
“Back where?”
“To the world of the living, duh,” the girl rolled her eyes.
“So I’m not dead?” a still confused Daiki asked.
“No, you’re in the world between life and death,” the girl said with half-sarcasm.
“Why?”
The girl smiled, which somehow made Daiki’s heart twist. It was as if there was a certain sadness hidden behind her smile. “There is someone who still needs you,” she finally said.
“Eh?”
The girl pointed upwards towards what seems like an endless cloud of darkness. “Listen carefully.”
Daiki looked at the direction the girl pointed and listened carefully. At first, it was silence, but then, he could hear a person crying. A person that sounds like…
“Ryutaro,” Daiki voiced out, clenching his hands. Tears began running down his cheeks. “Ryu…taro… I-I have to go to him.”
The girl giggled. “I was waiting for you to say that,” she confessed.
“What are you talking about?” Daiki asked confusedly once again.
The girl snapped her fingers. “It’s time for you to return,” she exclaimed.
Daiki’s eyes widened, “Really?” When the girl nodded, his heart felt like it would burst from joy. Then he remembered one thing. “What about you?”
The girl shook her head. “I can’t.”
“What do you mean yo-…” Daiki was cut off when a swirl of light swept him off his feet. “What’s going on?”
“He’s waiting for you,” the girl stated. “He loves you very much, so don’t waste your second chance.”
Daiki nodded. “At least tell me your name,” he shouted.
“I am that which comes after winter,” the girl exclaimed before both of them disappeared in the swirls of light.
“Daiki?”
Daiki’s fingers twitched. Moving closer, Ryutaro took his boyfriend’s hand in his own. “Daiki,” he said again.
This time, Daiki’s eyes opened slowly. He blinked, adjusting his eyes with the light. “R-Ryutaro,” he managed to choke out.
Ryutaro reacted quickly. He reached for the glass of water on the side table and held the glass close to Daiki’s mouth so that he could drink. After replacing the glass, the teary-eyed Ryutaro immediately hugged his boyfriend.
“I was so worried. I thought you won’t ever wake up. It’s been five days, and I was so scared I would lose you,” Ryutaro said all at once while weeping like a child.
Daiki smiled. “Oh Ryutaro,” he whispered. “I love you too much to leave.”
“Don’t scare me like that ever again.”
“I won’t,” Daiki replied, letting the younger man hung onto him. ‘Thank you, mysterious girl.’
From outside the room, the doctor decided to leave the couple for the time being and left.
