jessica still remembers the moment she met sooyoung. it had been on her first day as an official sme trainee, sitting nervously on a bench outside the room where she was going to have her first dance lesson. she'd been terrified. there was so much riding on her, the weight of the company's expectations resting heavy on her shoulders. it was stupid, she thought, to have to live up to your baby sister. for a moment, jessica hated krystal for putting her in this position and herself for going along with it.

then a girl with short hair and round cheeks appeared in front of her. "hi," she said cheerfully. "i'm sooyoung."

jessica blinked. "um. i'm sooyeon."

"that's a pretty name," sooyoung said. she sat down next to jessica, bouncing a little in her seat. "so you're a trainee, too? maybe we'll be put into the same group!"

"maybe." jessica ducked her head, hiding behind her hair.

sooyoung frowned. "don't be nervous. i'll be there with you, okay?" jessica watched as fingers slid between her own. sooyoung's palm was damp against hers. when she looked up, sooyoung was beaming at her. "sooyeon hwaiting!"

looking back, jessica thinks maybe that's when she fell in love.

nowadays, sooyoung mostly calls her jessica. the only time she uses sooyeon is when they're laying in bed with the lights off, telling each other their secrets. sooyoung twines their fingers together the same way she did when they met, but now she kisses jessica, too, quick brushes against her cheek and jaw that leave them both giggling and breathless. jessica tightens her hold and leans up to kiss sooyoung properly, and sooyoung responds by sliding her arm around jessica's waist. they fall asleep like that, nestled together with their hands tangled between them, and when jessica wakes up she looks at the pattern of sunlight on sooyoung's face and thinks joining sme was the best decision she's ever made.

minho wipes his palms on his jeans as he waits for the doorbell to ring. he's pretty sure everything is ready: the temperature is holding steady at a pleasant 20°C, there's old jazz playing unobtrusively in the background, and the food is done and just waiting to be taken out of the oven. nevertheless, minho can't help but check nervously on every room to make sure everything is as it should be. he's just lighting another candle in the bathroom when the cheerful ding-dong rings through the apartment. minho's heart jolts, and he nearly drops the match. "coming!" he yells, shaking out the match once the wick catches fire. he goes back to the living room and takes a final, steadying breath before he opens the door with the smile he practiced in the mirror for a week.

jinki's standing there with a scarf wound around his neck and cheeks tinged pink from the cold. his eyes curve into crescents when he sees minho. "hi."

"hi." minho steps aside for him. "come on in." he shuts the door behind jinki and holds his arm out for his coat and scarf. jinki hands them over with a smile, and minho has to bite his tongue from saying something incredibly stupid and un-suave like, wow, i never knew a shirt could look that good on someone. jinki's still smiling at him when he turns back from hanging everything up, and minho notices that there's anxiety lingering at the corners of his mouth. jinki's as nervous as he is, he realizes abruptly, and the thought somehow puts him at ease. "come on," he says with a grin. "let's eat."

"she was born with craniosynotosis, which basically means that her skull was shaped like a long oval instead of a sphere," jinki is saying. minho likes the way he moves his hands as he talks, enthusiasm extending even to the tips of his fingers. "so she had to wear this little helmet as a baby to fix it, and now she has this teddy bear that wears it instead. she takes it everywhere," jinki beams. he looks almost as young as his patients when he does that, even with the glass of red wine cradled in one hand.

"i'm guessing eunhee is your favorite," minho says with a laugh.

jinki nods. "she's only three, but she's sweet as anything. nobody's ever had a problem with her."

"mm." minho runs his fingers over the arm of the couch. dinner had gone as well as he'd hoped, and they'd ended up moving to the couch for drinks. jinki looks comfortable and relaxed as he sips at his wine, and minho can't help imagining how it would feel to have this every night. he ducks his head when his cheeks start to flush, hoping jinki didn't see anything.

but when he looks up again, jinki is watching him. minho opens his mouth to say something stupid like, is there soy sauce on my face? but jinki sets his glass down and leans in before he can. he fits his mouth against minho's slowly, carefully, like he's afraid he's going to frighten minho off. minho presses a hand to the back of his neck instead, urging him on. they kiss for what feels like hours, and when minho finally pulls away jinki's lips are red and wet and he looks just as dazed as minho feels. "jinki," minho murmurs, sliding a hand over his side.

jinki sighs and sits back, pushing a hand through his hair. "i have to go," he says apologetically. "i've got an early shift at the hospital tomorrow."

"oh." minho's heart sinks in his chest. "okay."

"it's not that i want to leave!" jinki adds quickly, seeing the look on his face. "because i don't! but if i stay, i won't get any sleep." he realizes the double meaning a second after he says it and flushes.

minho clears his throat, feeling his own cheeks burn. "i'll, um. i'll get your coat." he helps jinki put it on, and they stand there looking at each other for a few awkward moments.

"i had a good time tonight," jinki finally says. he smiles warmly at minho and takes his hand. "we should do it again soon."

"yeah." minho leans in and gives him a short goodbye kiss that turns into a long one when jinki's hand curves around the back of his neck. they break apart a few minutes later, and jinki gives minho a goofy smile as he moves away.

"goodnight," he says as he opens the door and takes a step outside-

-and promptly slips on the ice and falls hard. minho is over in a split second. "oh my god, are you okay? jesus, that looked painful-should i call an ambulance?"

"i'm fine," jinki gasps. "just-ah, probably bruised my coccyx. er, my tailbone," he explains at the confusion on minho's face. "i'll be okay, i just…i don't think i can get up."

"okay, hold still." minho carefully slides his arms under jinki and lifts him up, then carries him inside and sets him gently on the couch. he goes back and closes the door, shivering a little at the cold air outside. "how fast will this heal?"

"i'll be sore for a few days, but i should be good as new in a week or so." jinki winces when he tries to sit more upright. "but i don't think i'll be able to go in to work tomorrow."

"you're not in any shape to go home either," minho says, eyebrows knitting together.

"oh, no, i wouldn't want to, to intrude or anything."

minho shakes his head. "there's nothing to intrude on. it's not like i have to go in to work tomorrow, since it's the weekend. you can have my bed, i'll sleep on the couch."

jinki still looks a little hesitant. "i can sleep on the couch, it's not a problem."

"no," minho says firmly. "there's no way that would be good for your spine." he kneels in front of the couch and takes jinki's hand. "it's fine, i promise. and i'm not going to…take advantage of you or something, if that's what you're worried about."

jinki's eyes widen, and he shakes his head. "no, no, i didn't think that at all. i just feel bad." he squeezes minho's hand. "but thank you."

minho squeezes back. "call the hospital and tell them what happened, and i'll go get my room presentable, okay?" jinki nods, and minho goes to his room. he changes the sheets and tidies up, and when he returns, jinki's pushing himself into a sitting position. "can you walk to the bedroom or should i carry you again?"

jinki smiles up at him. "i can walk, thanks. but you should probably make sure i don't fall again."

minho helps jinki up and keeps a steadying hand on his back as he moves. when they get there, minho gestures at the clothes folded on the bed. "sweatpants and a tshirt, if you want them for pajamas."

"okay. thank you." jinki is giving him that smile again, the one that makes his stomach do somersaults, and minho looks away to hide his blush.

"i'm going to go fix up the couch. yell if you need me." once he's in the living room minho takes a moment to compose himself, in-through-the-nose and out-through-the-mouth until his heart rate is back to normal. he lays the blankets on the sofa with deliberate slowness to give jinki time to get dressed. once he's done, he goes back to his room and knocks on the door. "jinki?" he calls. "are you decent?"

"come in," jinki laughs, and minho enters to find him sitting cross-legged on top of the sheets. he reaches out and draws minho in to sit next to him, twining their hands together. "i'm sorry to put you out like this."

minho shakes his head. "it's not a problem at all. i just want to make sure you're okay."

jinki smiles at him, his thumb sliding over the side of minho's index finger. "you're sweet."

"i like taking care of people," minho admits.

jinki gingerly slides back to rest against the pillows and tugs minho with him. "maybe you should have become a doctor."

"i thought about it, actually." minho settles in next to him, his arm automatically curving around jinki's shoulders. "but i realized pretty quickly that i'm not very good at all the medical stuff. besides, i love being a teacher. i wouldn't trade it for anything."

"first-graders are fun," jinki agrees. he shifts to fit his head into the space between minho's chin and his shoulder. "bratty at times, but always so inspiring."

"mm." minho combs his hand through jinki's hair, and jinki hums and pushes up against his fingers. minho presses a kiss to his temple that turns into a line of kisses down his cheek and onto the corner of his lips. jinki turns a little to meet him then, tilts his head back and invites minho into his mouth. their kisses are slower now, and made more intimate by the curl of minho's fingers against jinki's neck. it's only when jinki tries to stifle a yawn that minho finally pulls away. "i'm not boring you, am i?" he asks, half-amused and half-worried.

"sorry, i'm just…really tired." jinki smiles ruefully. "i've been working a lot lately."

"well, you aren't tomorrow, so you can just relax." minho traces idle patterns onto jinki's shoulder. "i usually get up early to go on a run, but i'll make breakfast instead, how does that sound?"

"it sounds good," jinki says, the corners of his mouth quirking up. "but it'd sound even better if it were served in bed."

minho laughs. "and here i thought a doctor would be more sanitary than that."

"well, it's not my bed, is it?"

"point." minho kisses jinki's forehead before disentangling himself and sitting up. "i'll let you get some sleep, but remember that i'm right outside if you need me. i'm a fairly light sleeper, so if you shout i should wake up."

jinki looks down and mumbles something, and when minho looks at him questioningly, he takes a deep breath and tries again. "you could…stay. if you wanted."

minho's heart flips in his chest, and he swallows hard. "the couch is fine. you don't have to offer the bed to me."

"i sleep better when there's someone with me," jinki confesses. "something about having another heartbeat that close is…soothing. and if we spoon, you could act like a back brace for me." his tone is joking, but he can't quite meet minho's eyes. "i'm not suggesting we, um, we do anything, because that'd be bad for my back, but i just thought, if you wanted to…."

minho nods when he trails off. "yeah. yeah, just let me go turn off the lights in the living room." jinki's already under the covers when he comes back, on his side facing the wall. minho slides in behind him and carefully fits their bodies together, mindful of his spine. jinki sighs and leans back a little, pressing his shoulders to minho's chest, and minho curves an arm over his waist. he falls asleep with his nose pressed against jinki's neck, jinki's fingers tangled with his, and the thought in his mind that he'd like to fall asleep this way every night.

one month later, he gets his wish.
