On a scouting mission, we first met the woman who would lead us into this mess. Unable to leave a single person behind, the rest of the company decided to aid her against my advice. She was the hidden princess of Crimea.
Princess Elincia, I learned, was raised without any political training for the position she would inherit. Weak-willed, inexperienced, and naive, she was in no way capable of the position we sought to wrest for her. But, admittedly, she invaluably boosted morale within the conquered country -- a necessity for what increasingly sounds like an ill-chosen war. Even if she is inept, her retainers could run the country for her. Figureheads always have some use.
The other memory...
We were staying in an abandoned fort within Gallia. In the middle of the night, we noticed that Ike and the Commander were missing. Boyd returned with the news that the Commander was dead. Shinon and Gatrie left loudly. Ike, at least, was unharmed.
The shift in leadership marked a decisive change in the method of our operations. In a way, I felt that, at that moment, the war was truly ours.
