I have been having trouble sleeping lately, and was lying awake around 2 am when I heard lots of yelling, screaming and general drunken hollering from outside. I get up and look out the window to see a mass of cars attempting to leave Duquesne. I had the sudden urge to say a strange prayer, ‘God, make these kids go home. Make them get back safely to their place of residence so they don’t get hurt- and so I can get some sleep!’ I get my ipod in and fall asleep.
I wake up this morning to the news that 5 Duquesne students were shot outside the Student Union at 2 am this morning.
They were leaving a dance and were confronted by some people that were not from Duquesne- words were exchanged, and one of the men pulled out a semiautomatic. 2 of the kids were released this morning- but one, Samuel, has a head injury and is in critical condition. They were all basketball players and just young guys, too. The shooter has not been found.
I know things like this happen all the time in cities, but the fact that they were in the Duquesne bubble- at a Duquesne-sponsered function, even- and not out and about in the city makes this all the more upsetting. I mean, I was across from that same Union at 9 last night. I think despite our police and our set apart campus, the saftey is mostly an illusion- we're still in the middle of a city, and people can still get in from outside.
ETA: apparently now they are giving names to the press. Here's a more in debth article:
