You read right. There's a new type of disc out called the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) that can hold 3.9 TB (terabytes). That's about 2,000 Divx-compressed movies per disc. I've actually known about this for over a year, but I never really did the math on it until now. Here's the math (it took me a while to figure this out, since I suck at math):
1 Divx movie: 1.5 GB average (I have generously estimated 2 GB)
1 TB = 1,024 GB (512 movies) [hard drives have just now gotten this big...time to start saving up me cash!]
3.9 TB = 3993.6 GB = 1,996.8 Divx movies - Here I bump up the number of movies to 2,000 since I've only ever seen 2 Divx movies larger than 2 GB: Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan, both have lots of action and are 3 hours long; the average is less than 2 GB and therefore actually places the number of movies above 2,000 per disc
So now comes the fun part. The HVD discs are the exact same size and shape as CD's and DVD. So I took some of those really thin, clear 2-disc cases that you can hang on the wall, put blank DVD's in them, and stuffed as many as I could into *one* of the cargo pockets on my jeans without risk of cracking the cases. I could fit 6 safely into one pocket and still close it, meaning 12 discs in all. If those were the new HVD's each filled to capacity with Divx movies, assuming 2,000 movies per disc, the total number of movies in my *one* pocket would have been 24,000.
"Hi, welcome to Lackey's Moooooovies! Our special today: Rent two, get a third free."
"Yes, I'm looking for "Sense And Sensibility."
"My pocket."
"...I'm sorry?"
"That's in my pocket."
"Oh. Um...ok. What about "Empire Strikes Back?"
"That's in my pocket, too. We have the original and Special Edition."
"Cool. So what about...um..." *whispers* "Naughty Nymphs of Nantucket?"
"Ah, naturally that would be in the Adult section."
"And, er, where's that?"
"My other pocket."
"What, you mean the one that can't close all the way?"
"Yeah, that's it."
