You know how they used chocolate syrup as the blood in the famous shower scene in Psycho because it was in black and white? It's weird to think about the different ways that movie directors had to imagine their sets and costumes and whatever else because there was no color. I would think that now movies put a lot of emphasis on coloration as a way to create a certain kind of mood in that particular scene or give certain ideas about a character or place. I guess they still had to consider what part of the grayscale various things would appear, but I wonder how often they thought "oh it doesn't matter, they won't see it anyway because the movie is not in color." I bet it kind of screws with your head after concentrating on editing a lot of black and white footage and then turning around and looking at the real world.
