OH GOD

WHO AM I KIDDING I NEED TO DO AN LJ-CUT ABOUT THIS

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS GLORIOUS FILM (apologies in advance for my not spoiling myself with summaries before the movie 8D I went in blind):

AUDIENCE: Okay, first of all, we got a great audience. They were properly obnoxious during the trailers and properly silent during the actual movie. They also cheered and laughed at all the right places. It was sweet. <3

GOTHAM CITY: Okay, the whole atmosphere of this movie was amazing. The whole thing had you on your toes, feeling majorly unsettled and with this constant feeling of nothing is safe, and the whole theme of futility and chaos and the simultaneous darkness and hope in humanity was driven home incredibly viscerally without the usual feeling of clichédness that the theme usually gives you in superhero movies. The main driving force of all this was, of course...

THE JOKER: Heath Ledger was beyond amazing. Now, when I heard all the reviews raving about his performance, I took it with a grain of salt given his untimely death and people generally getting glorified posthumously, but oh my god. He really was that incredible in the role, giving it a really dark, really fucking disturbing edge while at the same time keeping the same kind of dark sense of humor and just... JOKERNESS that the role requires. I mean, anyone who can constantly unsettle the living shit out of you and then put on a nurse's dress and make you laugh at the idea of blowing up a hospital is damn impressive in my book. What also struck me is how even the scenes that everyone constantly saw in the trailers just don't do the performance justice and were so much more in the actual movie. The tension in the movie and the levels of meaning give it so much more with the rest of the script to back it up. (Example: "HIT ME! HIT ME!")They did a great job fleshing out the Joker's psychotic philosophy and really pulled off the "I AM YOUR OTHER HALF" thing with Batman with it feeling like a natural part of the plot rather than a forced I'm-your-nemesis superhero deal.

Also loved his shtick with cutting the faces (AHHH D8) and how he changed the story every time because he's a psychotic bastard who doesn't need a weepy backstory hahahaha. XD And man, his interaction with Batman was so intense. And the YOU COMPLETE ME LOL GAY and his general protectiveness over Batman staying Batman was just wonderful and so true to the canon. All in all, it was incredible just how much psychological punch Ledger brought to the role by enhancing the preexisting spirit of the character rather than replacing it. He does makes Jack Nicholson's Joker look like child's play. There was a level of creepiness and devotion to a psychotic philosophy that Nicholson's Joker never even got close to breaching.

HARVEY DENT / TWO-FACE: HOLY CRAP THEY DID THIS ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY I CANNOT EVEN EXPRESS MY PURE JOY SKdhfslkgj okay, coming into this movie, I figured that they'd make Harvey Dent one of those typical hay-let's-take-down-the-vigilante D.A. types in this canon and that they'd interpret the "Two-Face" symbolism as typical lawyer duplicity. BUT NO. THEY MADE HIM BATMAN'S ALLY. THEY MADE HIM SINCERE. THEY MADE HIM CARING AND LOVING. THEY MADE HIM A GOOD GUY THAT YOU COULDN'T HELP BUT ROOT FOR, which is EXACTLY why the fall from grace and the massive self-corruption was so fucking amazing. And God, all the foreshadowing and indications they gave of just how nice a guy he was but how he had the potential to fall to something much worse made the oncoming train heading straight for him all the more obvious and all the more painful. AND HIS FACE WAS SO HIDEOUS. BEAUTIFULLY HIDEOUS. Some girl said out loud right after they revealed it "IT'S SO GOOD" and GOD DO I AGREE. I also figured that his psycho rage would stem from his not being saved by those he trusted, but of course not, he was devastated by Rachel's death, which just made the whole thing more tragic (AND SHOCKING HOLY CRAP THEY KILLED HER OFF). Of course, his maliciousness afterwards was totally crazy and totally evil WHICH WAS AWESOME. YES. VILLAINY BORNE FROM TRAGEDY AND SELFISHNESS BORNE FROM HUMAN WEAKNESS. I. LOVE IT

I also absolutely adored the whole symbolism of his face and his identity in general representing a shining light for Gotham and the Joker's corruption of the city and showing its true, humanly sinister nature succeeding through Harvey rather than through the city itself. SO GOOD, GOD. <33333333333 Also absolutely love how Harvey was Joker's pet project in turning a man into a monster AND THAT SCENE IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM. I DIIIEEEED IT WAS SO GOOD I WANT TO SLASH WAY TOO BADLY. FREAKFACES OTP???

And oh man, speaking of OTPs, what about OT3's????

TRIO OF AWESOME: Batman, Gordon, and Dent SHIT YES. <3333 And ahaha that ending scene where Gordon and Batman were all "WELL JESUS HE FAILED HARD" and "YEAH, THAT'S THE LAST TIME WE LET ANYONE INTO OUR CLUB TREEHOUSE >:["

GORDON GORDONNNNN always love for Gordon. <3333 I WAS GENUINELY SCARED THEY'D KILLED HIM OFF, I'LL ADMIT IT. ;_; I tried to tell myself he hadn't made Commissioner yet; he couldn't be dead and THANK GOD I WAS RIGHT. The scene with him and Two-Face at the end was so horrible and sad ksjdfhlska ngghhh though I think roseisrain had a good point on WHY DID THEY FOCUS ON HIS SON INSTEAD OF BATGIRL BARBARA??? I guess maybe they want her to be a character later on so they don't want to risk showing a girl and casting someone who doesn't look like her? IONO. SEEMS SEXIST FISHY TO ME. >:[

CRANE / SCARECROW: omg his cameo was adorable. <33333 ADORABLE.

BATMAN: CHRISTIAN BALE you are indeed casted wonderfully. While Batman wasn't so much in the spotlight in this one as he was in Begins due to having more major villains this time around, he was still Batman and to see his frustration and pain in dealing with the Joker and the world collapsing around him was really heartbreaking. (Also LOL BRUCE WAYNE <333 SUCH A DICK) I also loved how there wasn't any real jealousy/competition bullshit going on between him and Harvey (was totally expecting it) and it was all between Rachel and Bruce. WOULD HAVE BEEN SO ANNOYING. D:

AND I COULD SAY MORE BUT OH GOD I NEED TO SLEEP and then wake up in a few hours and help my mom sort legos and then head over to Andrew's to dogsit. :3

But yeah... this is by far my favorite superhero movie of all time. No, I do not say things like this impulsively. It had my two favorite supervillains, my favorite superhero, my favorite super-universe, and it handled it all with stunning, flying colors, developing all of them with so much depth in so little time. SERIOUSLY, MGS4 AND NOW THIS? IS IT MY BIRTHDAY OR SOMETHING?

....Also, is it just me, or was this movie like 983274984x gayer than Batman Begins? BECAUSE IT WAS AWESOME.

movies, batman, fangasm, awesomeness
