Groundhog Day

Feb 03, 2007 10:07

Sorry for the excessive amount of quotes from the movie Groundhog's Day...it is just one of my favorite movies, Bill Murray is hillarious in it. If you haven't seen it, you should definitely crawl out from the rock you're living under and rent it.

Speaking of living under a rock, let me fill you in on what's up with me. I have no excuses for not posting the month of January, I had tons of time on ER; I think the problem was I was so used to NOT having time that I just sort of forgot about the blog. Now it's my home screen when I open up internet explorer, so hopefully I will remember to post more.

I had some bad news this week; my Grandma (aka Nana) is not doing so well and she is in the hospital. She has dysphagia, dysarthria, and generalized weakness. They did a bunch of the standard stroke tests and cannot find any evidence of stroke. They did some nerve conduction tests and some of the results support the possibility of Guillain-Barre. I am praying constantly for my Nana and I would appreciate any friends and family who are reading this to join me in keeping her in your thoughts and prayers. I have my first week of vacation since residency started this month, and I'm flying out to Great Falls Feb 19th-24th to hang out with Nana and whoever else will put up with me for a week :) Looking forward to seeing the Great Falls folks.

On a happy note my cousin Brooke is expecting her first baby soon; I believe her due date is next week. I am also praying for you Brookie, and I know you are going to be a fantastic mommy. I can't wait to see pictures, so don't be stingy!

On another happy note, Arun and I recently celebrated our two year anniversary of our first date; we went to the same restaraunt that Arun took me out to on our very first date. We are doing well and are continuing to amicably plan our May 12th wedding. A typical planning session goes something like this:

Lacey- "So what do you think honey, should we register for the green or the blue plates..I really want your opinion?"
Arun- "Actually I don't like either of them."
Lacey- "Perfect! We'll go with the green plates then."

Just kidding, we are having a good time planning:) Gail, Tom, and the Chinamen continue to turn out amazing stuff for the wedding (for a detailed explanation of the Chinamen you'll have to ask Arun...he is convinced that my parents are making so many beautiful things for the wedding that they must have a basement full of Chinamen who slave away all day and night!). I have my first dress fitting this week which is exciting....anywho, I could go on and on about wedding stuff, but I'll spare you.

ER was a nice rotation last month and neurosurgery looks like it will be a nice rotation too. On my first day I got to close the wound on two back surgeries (a laminectomy and a hemi laminectomy with discectomy). Next week my preceptor says I will get to do the whole surgery. It's very interesting working on the spinal cord. There is a huge amount of anxiety and pressure, which I totally thrive on. An then there's the awe of opening up the back and seeing the spinal cord floating in the cerebral spinal fluid (the dura that surrounds the spinal cord is suprisingly lucent, so you can see the cord and nerves floating in it). It's hard to believe those structures that I'm seeing that look so simple are what enable us to move around.

After this month I have vascular surgery, then peds surgery, then plastic surgery, and then from then on it's all orthopedics all the time. Well, I should go now. Arun's on call today so I'm home alone. Just going to study all day I guess...I'm taking Step three march 1st and 2nd so I better read a little Crush the Boards for Step 3.

Hope all is well with my firends and family, and please remember to say a little prayer for my little Nana.

Love you,

Lacey
