350.org International Day of Climate Action - Saturday October 24th

Oct 16, 2009 12:18

Join in on October the 24th as people around the world celebrate the 350 International Day of Climate Action!

People in over 160 countries will be sending a united message: 350 is the most important number for our planet. It's the safe upper level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (in parts per million), but we are currently in overshoot at 387ppm and increasing 2ppm each year. On October 24th, we will show our leaders that we need a global climate treaty that will get us back to 350 as fast as possible.

As the first to see the sun on Oct 24th, New Zealand is kicking off the day of action in style! There are over 100 350-themed and totally inspiring events planned - from planting 350 trees to dancing in Britomart (Auckland), to human sculptures and a waterfront festival (Wellington), to impromptu choirs, bicycle fashion parades and seedling giveaways (Christchurch), to school bike rides (Masterton), and a massive Spring Food Festival (Dunedin).

Images of New Zealand actions will join with others from around the globe to create a powerful visual statement. These will be presented to world leaders (including our Climate Change Ministers), will be shown on large screens in Times Square, New York, and broadcast around the world.

So join us, and take this day to show that New Zealand is united in our call for an ambitious, fair, and binding global climate deal. For more details of NZ events, see 350 Aotearoa's site and for global events, visit 350.org.

My little bit of all this amazing activity will be at Victoria Square, hosting The Great 350 Vegetable Seedling Giveaway! Details here. This is part of a totally cool event being run by Frocks on Bikes, so bring your bike (and your frock if you're so inclined) and enjoy the festivities! There are also a whole lot of other events happening around Christchurch and Canterbury - check them out!
