“Holmes! Holmes!” Watson flew into the sitting room, waving a magazine about his head excitedly. The detective paused for a moment, torn between the delicate experiment he was performing, and his friend's equally delicate temper. He eventually set down his pipette and vowed to try again later.

“I see you've picked up the family Christmas Annual,” a small smile flitted across his lips, “upon having discovered your own story inside.”

Watson deflated a little, but could not be entirely discouraged. “I will never know how you figure all these things out so far in advance, Holmes.” He sat down in his armchair heavily, but clutched the thick magazine tightly as a child might a favourite toy. Holmes found it oddly endearing.

“Yes, well, one will tend to pick up things one sees one's own name on. I'm surprised you could still get one, they were selling rather well when I picked up my own copy.” Holmes bent over in his chair to pull an identical publication out of the bottom drawer of his desk.

“How is it you knew I'd been published before I did?”

“Clerical error, I assume. Letters lost in the mail. It is the season for it, you know.”

“Bah humbug to you to.” Watson grumbled, annoyed at Holmes' lack of enthusiasm over his achievement. Holmes merely looked at him blankly.

“I'm very proud of you, if that's what concerns you.” The detective announced suddenly. “It's one thing to be published, of course, and I know myself what that feels like. But to have people actually want to read your work is a different matter entirely.”

Watson wasn't entirely sure what Holmes intended by saying that, but he smiled nonetheless. “It is. Thank you, Holmes.”

“Watson...” Holmes began a few minutes later, “it occurs to me that this story is rather complimentary of me. Embellished to make me look... almost mystical. Superhuman, in some ways. Is it really how you see me?” He finished mildly.

“I have been long disabused of the notion that you are in any way perfect, Holmes.”

“Nobody is perfect, doctor. Even you yourself. But that was not the question. Specifically, I wonder if your apparent fascination with my hands, for example, remains?”

Watson blushed slightly and looked indignant in an attempt to cover it up. Holmes smiled slowly at this. “Good. I think we might have to explore that, don't you?” He stood and headed over to the armchair Watson was sitting in.

Swallowing against a sudden dryness of mouth and lump in his throat, Watson tried to speak a few times before enjoying success. “Yes. Please.” He managed in the space of time it took for Holmes to lean down and kiss him gently.

“I don't think I've ever gotten to do this with a famous author, you know,” Holmes mumbled against Watson's lips, “Christmas seems to have come early.”
