Mini Fanmix for The Hollow

Jan 20, 2008 01:45

As of 2005 I got hooked on urban fantasy. It started with me deciding to read something other than romance (I was running out of favourite authors) and flipping through Laurell K Hamilton's Laughing Corpse.

Since then, I devoured all of her books that I could lay my grubby paws on, gnashing my teeth at my inability to read in sequence and discovering other authors like Simon R Green, PN Elrod and Kim Harrison.

I had just finished Kim Harrison's latest A Few Demons More. Her Rachel Morgan takes some getting used to; initially I found her abrasive and whiny. But for some strange reason, I keep reaching for her book every time a new one pops up at my local rental bookstore. She is insecure, ambivalent about her sexuality (she'd like to think she's straight but her relationship with her vampire housemate is causing her some doubts), tends to whine  about  things beyond her control and sulks. She also kicks ass as a bounty hunter and is a gifted witch, thanks to the genetic treatment she underwent as a child to save her life. She is not an easy character to like, but she does suck you into her story.

There are some writers whose books feel like there's a soundtrack running along as the story unfolds and Kim Harrison is one of them. She actually asked fans to post music they think suits the characters and below is my contribution.

Depeche Mode: "Only When I Lose Myself" - Ivy's yearning for Rachel.

Joni Mitchell: "Jericho" as covered by kd lang  explains what Rachel feels for Kisten.

Sophie B Hawkins: "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" by  describes the unwilling attraction between Rachel and Trent.

Neko Case: "Hold On, Hold On" - Rachel's ambivalence about love and her desire for it.

Bjork: "Come to Me" - The lure of Ivy to Rachel.

Tori Amos:"A Sorta Fairytale" - Ceri's theme.

Johnny Cash: "God's Gonna Cut You Down" - Kearsley's theme.

The B52: "Love Shack" - Absolutely Jenks and Matalina.

Gnarls Barkley: "The Boogie Monster" is Al's theme, hands down.

Interpol: "Evil" - Piscary.

Nekromantix: "Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend" - Rachel's relationship with Newt and Minias.

If anyone is interested, let me know.
