Faceted masquerade masks for Sweeney Todd

We're working on Sweeney Todd at PlayMakers right now, which is largely why i haven't posted anything in a while. Busy! But here's a quick look at just one of the many cool costume projects we've had in-house: the animal.masks for the masquerade scene.

Our costume designer, Bill Brewer, and our director, Jen Wineman, were really drawn to the mask ( Read more... )

This is so interesting. I use a method similar to this for costuming, but i use a program called Pepeakura which unfolds 3D models to 2D which are then printed and refolded to recreate the 3D model. I usually strengthen mine with Resin and/ Bondo. I would love to know more about the fusable felt you used. Would be much easier than a coat of resin. Thanks so much!

It's similar to this:

...but ours is an unbranded bolt from an upholstery job-lots dealer. Fusible adhesive on one side which is activated by an iron or heat-press, about 1mm thick.

Thank you so much. I hadn't considered fusible backing for my helmets, but I am going to try a test run.

Hi - old post of yours but I'm working on a mask right now. are these the correct steps:

Print template on cardstock
fuse felt on the back
cut out pattern
glue tabs
2 coats of gesso (this can go over the felt okay?)
2 coats of sculpt or coat
paint whatever color you want

when do you reinforce the eye holes with paper maiche? before applying the gesso?

thanks

You've got the order of operations correct, yes!

The gesso stuck to the fusible felt fine for us, and we did the maché around the eyes after the gesso but before the Sculpt-or-Coat.

Good luck! I'd love to see a pic of your finished mask!
