Wonderful Life Costumes: Page to Stage, part TWO!
So far, i've posted about using pinterest as a design tool in initial communication of visual research in costume conception, and a look at the development of the costume design for the character of Sally Applewhite. Today, let's take a look at the second of the two ladies in the cast: Lana Sherwood, played by Katja Hill.
Within the show's premise, Lana Sherwood is a renowned Hollywood star known for her dramatic range of characters, and she performs 15 different roles in the radio-play-within-a-play, from sexpot Violet Bick to Mary's harridan mother to George's little daughter Zuzu. She has a single costume which i've illustrated in two renderings:

I purchased the fabric for this look--a lush 4-ply silk--from Charlotte fabric store Mary Jo's Cloth Store. They had a bolt of peach-colored 4-ply on sale for $14/yard, which if you have priced 4-ply silk, you know it can cost up to $40/yard. However, we have the capabilities to dye yardage so I knew this was a bargain i could make work for my show.
Leah and her first hand, first-year grad Denise Dietrich, produced a truly beautiful look for this character, which you can see from these lovely stage shots from Tuesday night's photo call:

First-year grad and crafts assistant Corinne Hodges made Lana's hat as well. The wflat fur felt for the millinery came from Hatsupply.com. It's trimmed with a brown chenille bow and a mink crescent. Here is a shot of her craft-felt mockup for the first fitting:

The show opens at PlayMakers tonight, so now i'm off to get ready for the theatre!
