As some of you might be aware, it's been almost one full year since my last post - October 2nd, 2006 was my last friends only post (regarding Laura's birthday) and August 2nd, 2006 was my last public post (regarding my pediatrics clinical).
A lot has happened since then including, but not limited to, and in no particular order: graduating college, passing my NCLEX, buying a car, moving to Somerville, getting a boyfriend, working as a nanny, living in Chestnut Hill, finding a nursing job, turning 22 and probably a lot of other things I’m forgetting.
I've occasionally considered writing about what's happened over the past year, just for kicks and to remind myself what the year has been like. So when there was some excitement today I figured "why not?" and wrote the following...
I drove to the baby's house this afternoon, brought some stuff up to my room and turned on the lights. My plan was to take a shower and a lovely nap before dinner, but I decided to check my e-mail and mess around online a little first.
(5:29:49 PM) I think to myself "that smell like burning sugar sure is strong", but assume Michael is cooking
(5:29:50 PM) A flicker of orange catches my eye and I turn toward the window on the other side of the room
(5:29:51 PM) I realize that the curtain is on fire and that the flames are rapidly growing
(5:29:51.5 PM) I say "OH SHIT"
(5:29:52 PM) I jump off the bed and run to the bedroom door yelling "FIRE! CHRISTI!" as loudly as I've probably ever yelled in my life
(5:29:55 PM) I see Christi and the baby on the stairs, where she is yelling to Michael that there is a fire
(5:30:12 PM) The new nanny runs at me with a wet towel
(5:30:13 PM) Michael runs into the room with a fire extinguisher and puts out some of the flames, while I run to the phone and yell to take the baby out of the house
(5:30:14 PM) I realize that I can't pick up the phone because I have apparently been holding my laptop this whole time, so I drop it on Christi and Michael's bed and pick up the phone
(5:30:38 PM) I call 911 and run out of the house with Christi, the baby and the new nanny
(5:32:00 PM) As a policeman pulls up beside the house it seems like the amount of smoke coming out of my window is increasing exponentially
(5:32:15 PM) Michael finally comes out of the house
(5:33:19 PM) The first fire truck arrives and they go into the house
(5:34:07 PM) The firemen begin to throw things out of the window - the curtains... my towels... other things apparently in the way...
(5:34:30 PM) The second fire truck arrives and they join the first bunch in the house
(5:35:15 PM) We talk to the neighbors and I realize I probably should have put shoes on
(5:35:17 PM) The man who lives next door tells us that his 7 year old daughter saw the smoke and called the fire department too. She has a little tear next to her eye and is obviously upset so we tell her how awesome she is and, when Christi says something along the lines of "neighbors need to look out for each other", she seems proud of herself
(5:43:51 PM) The firemen come outside to tell us that the fire appears to be finished and that we can go back in - I wonder how smokey everything will be
(5:44:26 PM) I start to walk into my room but stop because everything has been thrown all over the place and is covered by a white dust I can only assume came from the fire extinguishers used by Michael and the firemen
(5:44:27 PM) I realize how much like smoke everything does smell
(5:44:30 PM) We start to clean up
Basically the silk curtains were touching the light on the wall, which caused the burning sugar smell and then the actual fire. All things considered it went fairly well, for a fire... everyone is safe and the only things that actually burned were the curtains, the curtain rod and the light. And while I don't really have a bedroom anymore and everything I own smells like smoke/is covered in white dust and spread around the house, it could have been much worse. I could have left to take a shower, or gone downstairs, or fallen asleep, in which case no one would have seen if for who knows how long.
Of course, I do have faith in that little girl and her ability to sense danger... I'm 100% planning to make her cookies. Or to buy her a pony. Something like that.
PS. After going through my stuff it appears that the clothes I kept in my duffel bag might not smell like smoke! This happier moment brought to you by L.L. Bean, the company who knows to line their bags plastic so that it is difficult for smoke and white dust to get inside - yay!
