WEEK 27

Song of the Week (100): Marit Larsen - Don't Save Me

After hearing that Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is going to be made into an American film, I decided to finally watch the Swedish film (075), Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, so I can properly hate this idea. While watching it, I realized that it's a funny thing about me and thrillers/mysteries: I can't stand them as novels, but I can tolerate, even enjoy, cinematic examples of the genre. For example, I love The Third Man, but I'm pretty sure I'd hate reading it. That is not to say that I enjoyed Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I'm just 100% sure that this movie is, for me, leagues better than the books. That said, this movie was only okay. Not a waste of my time, but neither do I understand why it was so well-reviewed. Raping and murdering women because the killer is just "doing what every man dreams of doing"? Can you get any more cliche? Nazi ties are mentioned, too. I did find Lisbeth's styling, for lack of a better word, iconic: a punk-hacker hot mess of black leather, numerous piercings and pixie haircut. Her character and her actress essentially made the movie.

5 THINGS THAT MADE THIS WEEK GREAT (086)

1. Mich's friend Alicia was in town over the weekend. Originally, I was only supposed to meet her on Sunday, but instead I went over on Friday evening and ended up spending the night for the whole shebang. We played Mario Party on the N64, walked around Frank & Sons (imagine a weekly dealers room for collectibles) and talked about penises, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and other things, I forget what else. I consented to having my picture with them (something I hate; I don't like my photo taken for anything, even IDs). And now Alicia and I are friends too, at least on LJ.

2. Mich and I finally finished BBC's Robin Hood. S3 was, quite frankly, terrible. The finale was garbage, in my opinion. Every time a character acted contrary to GOOD SENSE, or awful characterization happened, I thought to myself, "RUBBISH!" and even then I felt like I needed stronger words. The few good or decent moments of the season and better production values don't make up for the suck.

However, this:

...made me feel a bit better. Sure, it's probably from around when S2 aired, but it's cute. Guy makes for some passable eye-candy, I must admit.

3. I went to Catholic mass with Alicia and Mich, my first time attending anything Catholic ever. I'm always curious to experience new things, including religions, perhaps especially religions because I am far from being a religious person. Plus, Catholicism is an important part of Alicia's life and Mich's past, so I learned some things about them too. It was a bit awkward to have no clue what to do (do I stand now? kneel? are we singing again?), but since everybody was involved in their own thing I think that went mostly unnoticed. (I hope.)

4. Superb pal hwango showed Don a game, and he in turn showed it to me, and I have concluded that Echo Bazaar is pretty great for its type of game. Steampunkish, witty, well-layered. For some reason it reminded me of when I used to play as Puppy Poppy (don't ask) in Kingdom of Loathing, even though KoL isn't really that much like Echo Bazaar, except for both of them being text-based casual web games. (Also reminded me of NationState, another game that's not at all like Echo Bazaar. WTF, brain.)

5. Rather than embedding the Vimeo again, I'll just direct you to my LJ. Something Left, Something Taken was SO awesome, and makes me wish that big companies used stop motion more creatively (Fantastic Mr. Fox was pretty great, another example of incredible stop motion).

FAILED!

Didn't walk enough, didn't write at all. But I was out all week, every day! I will make up for it, somehow, at least the walking stuff.
