Start: Wednesday, February 10, 2010
End: Wednesday, November 7, 2012
001. Go to 2 different pick-your-own orchards. I have this soft-focus memory of going cherry-picking when I was a weester. Go with friends.
002. Learn how to cook without "testing the smoke alarms to see if they work" - dishes must be more complicated than a sandwich, unless it's a supermighty sandwich.
003. Start a novel, and keep at it until it's finished, even if it sucks. The process of sticking with a long-term project will teach me a lot.
004. Submit a short story to Writers of the Future. One that won't make the judges' eyes bleed.
005. Submit at least 5 short stories to paying magazines. "Paying" in this case can mean $5 and up. Or a cookie. Pray they are accepted for publication.
006. Keep purse organized. No more throwing change inside and letting it all accumulate at the bottom. Need a pouch or two. Will simplify changing bags.
007. Finish a sketchjournal every half-year. Doodle more. Remember more. Maybe in a couple years my penmanship won't look like lazy barbed wire.
008. Make a zine and distribute 25 copies of it.
009. Learn to play Mahjong, and after that, win a game of Mahjong. Well, relearn it. I knew how to play it as a child, but have since forgotten it.
010. Grow a garden, however small or ambitious. Maintain it so it doesn't become sad.
011. Make a salad with fresh produce from a farmers market, hopefully seasoned with some home-grown herbs.
012. Eat tomatoes without making a fuss about it. I really hate tomatoes for no rational reason (no allergies, I like veggies, etc). I like ketchup and I like tomato sauce, but if I see chunks of tomatoes then I am carefully avoiding them, shoving them to the side of my plate as if to banish them to Tomato Prison. I take tomato slices off my sandwiches too. I am inhuman, according to Certain Persons.
013. Cook one of my own meals every day for a month. Hopefully I've mastered #2 before I try this, otherwise I will have burnt lunches, and maybe also food poisoning, I don't know.
014. Take a pottery class and get my hands dirty. Use whatever it is I make, and be proud of it.
015. Relearn the piano.
016. Wear a dress in public. With colored tights and a pea coat with pockets a-plenty. I never wear dresses, and if I did I think I'd feel foolish (eek! knees!), but if I never wear one, how can I ever twirl in one?
017. Own a terrarium of carnivorous plants.
018.
Improve my penmanship so that when I write, it's consistent, legible and (hopefully) elegant. Be complimented on my beautiful handwriting. My penmanship isn't chicken scratch, but I constantly switch between cursive and printing, sometimes mixing the two for a word, and the style is never consistent. Learn calligraphy. Develop and cultivate a style that I can write in quickly for notes and a style that's more complex and requires more time.
019. Get in better shape. Go for a long walk at least once a week, and every three months, increase the number of times I do that per week. When it's warmer, use the pool. Be able to lift at least 50 lbs (uncertain how I'll accomplish this yet). Feel like I am Wonder Woman, except without the tiara or swimsuit in primary colors.
020. Volunteer for 4 local humanitarian/animal organizations. Gain work experience, meet people. Prove a track record of dedication and determination.
021. Build a house of cards that stays up for at least 5 minutes. Then knock it over with a breath. Feel cathartic as it all falls down.
022. Make 5 new good friends. Hello, would you like to be my friend? And not just friends I "meet" once and then never again -- that's just an acquaintance.
023. Go to San Diego ComicCon. It's just ridiculous that I'm in CA, a mere four hours from SD, and yet I've never been. Isn't that weird? And yet, every year I wonder why I didn't attend!
024. Learn to sew clothes, and maybe bags. I need a sewing machine, lots of colorful fabric and loud music. And maybe some alcohol. And bandages.
025. Learn how to make jewelry. Polymer clay? Beads?
026. Wear something I made myself in public. Whether it's a dress or a bag or a necklace. Similar to #14, be proud of what I made.
027. Sell 20 handmade Things on Etsy or Big Cartel. Capital-t Things. Which is not so much "ominous" as "vague because I have no idea yet what I'd sell."
028. Start a blog and maintain it for at least one full year. Update it at least once a week. Means I need to sit down and pick a name.
029. Start a webcomic with my BFF Kat. You know, the one we've been saying for years we'd do, only we never get around to it. For my part, this means writing scripts ahead of time so she can swear at me copiously as she breaks Manga Studio. And her computer. And then her tablet.
030. Buy a camera and take more photos. It doesn't need to be a high-end camera, just something sturdy and worth the investment. Learn how to take decent photographs. Try not to spam people with pictures of my cats, or what I had for lunch.
031. Make 7 photo-worthy bento that's healthy and delicious. Do it at least once for someone else. Make sure to include a handwritten note. (Possible corollary: Learn to make [nontraditional] bento!)
032. Make a pie from scratch. Using seasonal fruit, if sweet, or seasonal vegetables, if savory. Make an extra pie crust just to fill with whipped cream and throw it at someone. Placate them with the fresh pie.
033. Participate in an organized event - food/pillow/water balloon fight or protest. Don't worry if someone takes a picture of me. Might not be achieved within 1001 days.
034. Spend a night in an unusual B&B (bed and breakfast) such as a lighthouse or a chateau.
035. Go camping for at least two nights. Also acceptable: spending a week in an off-the-grid cabin that has a breathtaking view. Possible corollary: Learn how to go camping without being eaten by bears or killed by Stupid.
036. Be an active participant of a writer's group for at least three months. Online groups are okay. The key here is to be active in the community. ("Active" means I go to meetings or comment thoughtfully at least once a week.)
037. Move out.
038. Follow 3 letterbox trails.
039. Learn how to reupholster a piece of furniture. Probably something simple, like chair cushions.
040. Put those 2 oversized Threadless shirts I own through t-shirt surgery so that I can wear them.
041. Learn how to knit or crochet. Try not to get skeins tangled.
042. Learn how to embroider. Then embroider naughty things on inappropriate fabrics.
043. Go on 5 picnics at five different places.
044. Use a piggy bank. Doesn't necessarily have to be pig-shaped. Alternately, coinage could be saved in large Mason jars. Put all loose change in it (saving at least $5 worth of quarters for meters) and then, twice a year, cash it all in. That money must be used for something no less than AMAZING.
045. Make a pinata. Find a use for it. Fill it with Awesome.
046. Learn how to paint on shoes and on vintage bags.
047. Learn how to bind books.
048. Fly a kite twice. Keep it up in the air for at least thirty minutes both times.
049. Give up all meat except seafood. And then give up seafood, someday. (But not in this 1001 days. I can't help it, I love eel!) Every three months, give up one meat. Beginning with beef, then chicken, then turkey. I don't eat other meats (pork, duck, etc) often enough to bother listing, but they will be surrendered too.
050. Cook a meal for someone else. As a surprise!
051. Learn how to apply make-up, even if it's unlikely that I'll wear maquillage daily. It'd be nice for certain occasions, however.
052. Become conversational in languages I once knew. I spoke Mandarin as a child and forgot it by the time I was in 5th grade; now I'd like to learn it again. Took 4 years of French, also forgotten. I took a semester of ASL and loved it (it helped that my prof was hilarious, both in speech and in signs - it was exhilarating to do a presentation in just signing, and making a joke with my hands, and having my peers actually understand the joke and laugh), but I've lost my grasp on it.
053. Take a different picture for my driver's license. The one on my card now was taken when I was 16. Whoops!
054. Sing 3 new karaoke songs. My list of songs I am willing to sing is short, and mostly consists of holiday or Disney songs -- nothing modern. I'm just not very good at hearing lyrics as they're being sung; I need the actual words in front of me while I listen to the track.
055. Repair my GPA. With duct tape, verve and gum. MacGyver never needed more than that.
056. Finish a degree -- if that's even possible for me. I just can't seem to get this thing done. And then I wonder about getting a MLS degree, or going to law school.
057. Organize files, links, and books. They are scattered everywhere. It's daunting to think of it, but only because I let it intimidate me.
058. Donate/recycle/get rid of what I no longer use. Clothes, books, whatever. I am a packrat, and yet I don't find a cluttered environment very productive. I blame the mess for being a distraction.
059. Remember names more often. Repeat it several times, especially during a first meeting; associate the name with their face. Maybe actually remember important deadlines and dates too. (I despair at the second part, however -- something about numbers just slips right outta my head.)
060. Participate in 7 writing contests. Though I refuse to pay an entry fee more than $10 - $15 USD, unless the prize is ridiculously high.
061. Update
flame_fanning's Master List and Google Calendars whenever I have time to do so. Another case of "the longer you wait, the more work piles up, and then it's so daunting that I am too nervous to tackle it" -- keep everything manageable rather than monstrous.
062. Get a supercute haircut. I haven't changed my haircut for years, and it's always been very safe. I kind of want to dye it an auburn shade again, but not sure how that will go.
063. Replace soda with water or fruit drinks by end of 2010.
064. Purchase a reusable water bottle.
065. Read at least 2 Henry David Thoreau books as well as a John Muir book. The other day I realized that, though I found their quotes very apt, I had never read the source material. Compilations of books count as several books.
066. Read 25 non-fiction books, especially on subjects I enjoy or find interesting. I love nature writing, cultural anthropology, etc.
067. Join ROAR at
brigits_flame. Do assigned readings, and leave thoughtful feedback!
068. Don't buy a new bag for the next 1001 days. You can lust for them, but do not buy. The ones I already own are enough.
069. Exchange 5 mix CDs. Use colored CDs.
070. Acquire Magna-Tiles and play with them. Good for decompressing from stress. If suitable building block toy alternative is found, they'd also fulfill requirement.
071. Go to the San Diego zoo. Haven't been since... well, I can't even remember when I last went.
072. Write 3 long letters to people -- strangers or friends, whatever. Part of my efforts to improve my penmanship.
073. Wear a scarf, if only because I think I'd look silly wearing one and that's no real reason to avoid something. Um, and because it's always too temperate to bother with scarves.
074. Post 3 Outfit of the Day pictures. Make an effort to look more presentable while out and about, expressing my style. Stop freaking out whenever someone takes a photo of me. Camera required.
075.
Watch 30 Foreign Films. And review them, even if it's brief.
076. Go to 3 double-feature showings.
077. Join postcrossing and send&receive 5 postcards.
078. Check LAWeekly/OCWeekly once a week for six months for upcoming events, and go to 4 events I find interesting.
079. Go to 3 fruit festivals.
080. Find as many of my old postcards as possible. Especially by Bel, who sent me some true pieces of art. It breaks my heart to realize that, due to their small size, some of them might've (unintentionally) gotten put in the trash over the years. Find a nice way to store/display them.
081. Buy a scanner so I stop using its lack as an excuse from archiving my own drawings or starting my own webcomic.
082. Become an editor for either
flame_fanning or
brigits_flame and (important!) stay on top of assigned edits. 6 month minimum.
083. Put up an Inspiration Board because I always envy those. Also, keep an inspiration (digital) folder, properly sourced.
084. Move all personal files from desktop computer to new GMail address. Desktop isn't mine, so I don't want to suddenly lose access to my stuff.
085.
Identify 50 Things That Make Me Happy. I see this (or some variation of it) on a lot of lists, and it's always made sense to me. I'm a chronic complainer and I always think negatively of my life. Cogitating on, and recognizing, positive, life-affirming things would probably (hopefully) do me good.
086. List 5 things that were great about previous week (every week). Similar to posting 5 things daily, but I can see myself failing to do it every day, and losing steam. Weekly is doable.
087.
List and review every book I read as I read them. No minimum number of books required; it's guaranteed that I will read quite a few books - so long as I have access or means to acquire them.
088. Go to thrift stores and purchase something that will be used in some way.
089. Never take more than 3 days to answer personal email. Preferably, respond to them in less than 2 days. READ the personal emails ASAP, in case it's something urgent. If busy, send a quick note that reply will be sent as soon as the baying hounds of hell have been taken on their walkies - in other words, when things have calmed down enough, I will email back.
090. Go outside and blow bubbles for at least thirty minutes. At least once. Useful for decompressing from stress.
091. Leave 10 Operation Beautiful notes. Partly because I love post-it notes.
092. Make my bed every morning. Unless I am not sleeping on a bed.
093. Acquire a supercomfy bathrobe. One that feels great against skin.
094. Read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography.
095. Read
Letters of Note's archives. Link favorites as they're discovered.
096.
Name 25 Things I like about myself - or just something I recognize as a positive quality in myself. No repeats. My name will not be Negative Nancy forever!
097. Write at least 1,000 words a week. Do not delete! Even if it's dreck!
098.
List 50 Things for my Mighty Life List. Bonus: As these 1001 day cycles end, I can review this list and see what's gone from Someday to Soon. Then it's put on the new list!
099. Contact my HS Animation teacher before 2010 is over. I came across his website sometime last year and I wanted (so badly!) to drop him a friendly email, but I couldn't do it. I'm so afraid he'll tell me he has no idea who I am.
100.
Find a new song I like every week.
101. Do 3
Operation NICE assignments.
