I've been feeling sick off and on lately, necessitating another uneventful (but hopefully restful) week. Today I even took a sick day from school - I just couldn't stomach the thought of driving to class, and wanted to throw up. I'm trying to make up for it by being productive in other ways - emailing folks who wanted mix CDs to tell them that their mixes would be delayed, updating my transfer counselor on what's being done on my end, apologizing to Jim for my overdue response to his email, and writing. I've also begun thinking about coordinating a mid-year gift exchange, if anybody would be interested in such a thing.
No Song of the Week (100) this time!
WEEK 4
On Mar 4, I went to a protest (033) about CA's terrible education budget cuts, but I felt a bit lost there and didn't stay very long. I love California and I hate to see our state educational system in such a pathetic condition, but after the Prop 8 symposium on Mar 3, I just couldn't handle more bittersweetness. So I'm not counting this as fulfilling the goal.
I read In the Forest of Forgetting (087), or what I could read without killing my eyes. The copy I got had a printing error for a couple stories, making them difficult to read without hurting my eyes; ultimately, I felt that "reading what I'm able to read" still means I finished the book. Anyway, I love the fairy tale stories (particularly the Rose Red/Snow White and Sleeping Beauty stories), which isn't a surprise -- I always enjoy reading new twists or adaptations of beloved tales. A decent collection. Perhaps if it hadn't been for the printing error (which I know isn't the author's fault) I would have enjoyed this book more.
5 THINGS THAT MADE THIS WEEK GREAT (086)
1. Stuff came in the mail! So much stuff, in fact, that it felt like it was a special occasion, even though most of it is just stuff I splurged on. My new non-leather wallet, a pocket journal, a small sketchbook, perfume samples, lip balms, solid lotion... Smells SO good. All mail should smell that good.
2. Another mix CD, and it came with Mary-Kay samples to help me learn how to apply makeup (051)! It arrived when I was feeling both ill and a bit down, so super bonus points for that!
3. I actually wrote this past week (097), for the first time since starting this project. It clocked in at less than 1,000 words (it was between 800 and 900 words, that's all I know), but writing is writing, especially after not doing it for almost a whole month. Even better, the piece I wrote did pretty okay in the
brigits_flame polls!
4. This snippet of a short film ("Les Trois Inventeurs" by Michel Ocelot) that I desperately want to see now:

Cool in a different way is this one, Descendants:

5. I have gotten a hold of my former Creative Writing prof, which means I can secure my second Letter of Recommendation! This is very exciting to me, since I'd been afraid that he wouldn't remember me or my work, or that he'd refuse. But no, he called me one of the shining (creative writing) stars on our little campus. It made me smile when he ended his email with VIVA LA REVOLUTION. What a guy!
098. List 50 Things for my Mighty Life List.
3. Fly first class AND travel somewhere by train, at least one time each. Both of these are a bit spend-y, especially at my current budget, but that's why they're on a Someday list and not on my Soon list. I don't want to take a commuter train, if it can be helped; I want it to be a train I could maybe comfortably fall asleep on, perhaps because I'm traveling overnight.
4. Customize my own perfume through a perfumer.
IN PROGRESS:
I've got another 3 volunteers for mix CD exchanging (although one of them owes me their address!), so once they're all knocked out, that means I'll have completed my very first goal! (069)
I'm three "chapters" into a John Muir book (065), and halfway through the second chapter of The Anthropology of Turquoise (066).
