Morning Ritual

Jan 23, 2007 13:44

I woke this morning to a grey room, a dog sound asleep at my leg and out of dreams that seemed to literally count through the hours of the night, to the end of their world. I did not want to go to my early class, nor do I ever really want to get up and go to my early class, but I knew I had to. My alarm was due to go off in five minutes but I wanted desperately to go back to sleep. Can't do that, so I had to think about waking up. The first thing I usually do there is try to rouse the dog who will in turn help to rouse me.

"Kayla. Kayla," I tried to get her attention. I heard her collar jingle quietly as she shifted around her head to look at me, but she did not so much lift herself to move as grudgingly push her head around on the covers. She looked at me, waiting. I like to think I understand her. She was waiting for more motivation, for a bit of proof I was actually going to move rather than just lie in bed for another hour and waste her efforts to get me up. I smiled. "Kayla, come here." I tapped the space on the bed nearest me, empty as usual.

This was a little more interesting to her, so she shifted her weight onto her stomach and pushed herself closer using only her back legs, eventually coming eye to eye with me on my pillow. "It's time to get up." I told her. "You have to help me." She answered this by rolling over onto her back and putting her feet in the air, throwing her head back in distress. It was a desperate plea for a belly rub. After a moment she very subtly twisted her head to look at me with one eye. Does she see me? my drama queen wonders.

I laughed at her. Without any real help on her end I got up and ready while she lounged in my bed, following my movements closely though making no move to join me in the readying process. It wasn't until I put on my coat, the universal signal in her mind for going outside, that she sprang from the covers to land lightly on the floor by my door, tail and head in the air, ready for action.

I don't really know how I would start my day without her, so I guess it's only appropriate I start things off here with her as well.
