Presently reading Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall. It is terrific, but I am finding it oppressive to read. A lot of historical fiction gets me that way - a feeling like I already know what's going to happen (because, hey, I do), and it's not going to give me the happy ending I want for these people. This one is particularly bad, because 1. I actually know enough about the period to recognise some names and their personal unhappy endings, not to mention the fact that Henry's about to divorce Katharine and nobody really enjoys reading about that, do they? asshole; and 2. Quite often historical fiction will give you a person you aren't that familiar with, and give them a happy or happy-ish ending even though everything else is going to shit. Now, I know a lot more about Elizabeth I than I do about Henry VIII but even I know that Thomas Cromwell doesn't end happily.

Anyway, all that makes it difficult to keep going, and then she keeps killing people. I guess technically she has to kill them, but good god.

Here are two really pointless thoughts:

-Hilary Mantel is a name that really sat down and said "absolutely no extraneous "l"s, thanks!" I keep wanting to call her Hillary Mantell.

-Nobody likes reading about Henry divorcing Katherine, but I suppose if he hadn't we wouldn't have had Elizabeth, and she is my favourite (i.e. maybe I should just get over it and hating on Henry. Asshole.)

I'm housesitting at the moment so only have internet when I can be bothered plugging my laptop in in the freezing office, so if you're looking for me on chat and I'm not there, that's why. I miss you all though!
