Dinner and World Cup football

Karen invited me over for dinner Monday night. She had a friend in from New York, Joanne, who had been visiting Prague. Karen's smart friend from Texas (and I guess also my friend by now), John, was also there. Joanne got in late, so it turned out to be a late-night dinner around midnight. It was a good, home-cooked meal: chicken, steamed carrots, salad, and fresh bread (that was my contribution). I don't think I had eatten so well since my parents visited over Christmas.

Joanne was a good friend and co-worker of Karen's from New York when Karen was still working in publishing. Joanne was really smart and the four of us had a very adult conversation about Prague, Russian history, European football, and oddly enough... metatarsals. John had this interesting "theory", of sorts, that the reason you hear about so many British football players breaking their footbones, i.e. metatarsals, is because of the typical British diet consisting of nothing but fish and chips. His theory sounded laughably plausible to me and my solution was to somehow make it fashionable to include shredded cheese as a more common topping at chip shops. ;)

Iian text messaged everyone around 7:30pm or so yesterday asking if we wanted to meet up at the Pear Tree to watch the World Cup match Brazil vs. Croatia. Justin, Karola, Marjel, Greg, Iian, and two of Iian's friends showed up. Marjel bought me a beer. It was really warm and nice out so we all sat outside in the picnic benches section. They had a huge outdoor television screen set-up. It was great. You didn't even need to stretch your neck around in order to see. It was a good game. I was a little surprised that juggernaut Brazil didn't fair much better against lowly-ranked Croatia. They still won, but the score was only 1-0.
