Well, here we are, about half-way through the semester. I’m plugging away on the intro to my diss, meaning that I’m reviewing the literature and deciding what the hell it is that I’m trying to say. Word. I don't think the new kids realize that the 5-year plan that the department pushes during orientation is complete and utter bullshit. NO ONE CAN FINISH IN LESS THAN SIX, AND THE AVERAGE TIME TO COMPLETION IS SEVEN. Do the math, kiddos. But you know what the dept. is doing now? Giving 5 yrs of guaranteed money to incoming students. I asked one student what that meant: say if she got money for research, does that postpone the dept money, or is it that just the first 5 years of their time is covered? She couldn't answer. You know that the dept. is going to try that bullshit ( ... )

I would say something, but honestly, it would be massive battle to get the students in a 300-person class to put away phones, leave the internet alone, and pay attention. It's annoying what those TAs are doing, but it's also an excuse not to care, which probably will save me a lot of heartache.
