Yesterday my boss was talking about some project that we didn't end up getting or something like that and he said "we really blew our load on that one" Then he didn't understand why myself and the 2 interns were laughing, and he's all like "It's a legitimate phrase...it comes from the Revolutionary War era and it means when your powder goes off but your gun doesn't shoot....What? What's so funny? It means when you use up your ammunition but don't really get anywhere.....oh."
