Reign over me

Lover. Warrior. Rebel. King. Prepare for reign.

The tagline for Tudors cracks me up.

Blessed are those Showtime subscribers with a weakness for period drama and pillow-lipped actors, for thine is the Tudor kingdom tonight. From the reviews I've read, the general consensus is that woe will befall on the viewer who's expecting historical accuracy but those who like soap opera-style narrative filled with sex and sumptious settings will like this show.

My favourite description of the show comes from this New York Times review.

When the camera follows the young king and his rat pack of randy, rambunctious courtiers, "The Tudors" is a captivating romp, "Ocean’s Eleven" in ruffs and doublets. There are delicious details, like Henry boning up for a summit meeting with Francis I by quizzing the British ambassador to France about the French king’s looks. "What about his legs?" he asks Thomas Boleyn. "Are his calves strong, like mine?" The ambassador is all tact. "Your majesty," he purrs, "no one has calves like yours."

Ooh, thelovehater, our Hedi is on the unemployment line. Yet another designer-waif left out in the cold. Hedi Slimane's contract dispute with Dior Homme may go some way to explain the meh quality of his last, and final, collection for Dior. I know which fashion house can use a good designer across the deparments (men, women and accessories). Gucci. Okay, maybe Slimane's aesthetics are a little different from Gucci's, but man, Frida Giannini's reign of mediocrity must end now. And I'd love it if Hedi is the one who dethrones her.

I doubt that would happen though, since for some reason, sales has improved under Giannini. Apparently lots of people like her fugly stuff. The epitome of which is the Gucci 85th anniversary bag, fought over by everyone in the Swag episode from Ugly Betty. That bag is the one of the ugliest things I ever saw.

In a previous post I'd mentioned an adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray that is set in present-day New York City, starring David "7th Heaven" Gallagher. The movie has a website now, where you can watch the trailer. It looks awful. The bad-acting! The neon lights!

Stephen "Wilde" Fry seems to like the movie though. He's quoted on the website, "Roy's Dorian Gray has all the poisonous wickedness one simultaneously dreads and adores in the original novel in the Huysmans originals."
