OMG I used to love Eyeshield 21. It was one of the only sports mangas were the main team didn't always win, and the character designs were FASCINATING.
I WAS THERE FOR THE START OF THE FANDOM. I remember when Shonen Jump mentioned the series back when they were just starting an American version of the magazine, back when they had reviews for awesome comics that weren't translated yet. I remember downloading twenty chapters of fan translations on virus-infested websites in a single day, and then refreshing the same page for a half-hour, just waiting for a new chapter. I remember seriously considering saving up my money for an untranslated book, just to have my husbando's face on the cover.
I became a huge Rui fangirl just because he looked so weird, When have you ever seen a character drawn to look so alien? It's awesome! But I was a die-hard Hiruma fangirl. To this day, after three hundred chapters of cockteasing, with blue balls so pendulous I still can't finish the series, I squee everything I see him. Any connections made to other pointy athletes who would rather destroy their bodies to gain an inch than rest for now and train for the long haul is a complete coincidence.
Not that I was alone. He was the fandom bicycle. People shipped him with everybody, even characters he'd had no interaction with.
I shipped him with:
Musashi, for the pining
Agon, for the abuse
And Rui, for the-
Well, that's kind of hard to explain. The whole point behind Rui's character was that he was Hiruma-lite. He was dangerous, but not as dangerous. He was smart, but not as smart. He was charismatic, but not as charismatic. He was always second best to Hiruma, and the worst part was, as the youngest in a political family, that was the place he'd filled all his life. He has an older brother who did everything great before him, and he was expected to fit the same mold.
He has a nervous breakdown right in front of Hiruma somewhere around chapter 110, after his team loses the championship. His brother is just off-panel with the college glee club, which he apparently shang-hai'd into supporting Rui. Shows how big of a personality he had.
Hiruma seemed to see something worth keeping in Rui- he always had new material to keep him and his crew in service. Maybe blackmail and bullets was how Hiruma flirted made friends.
I guess I should mention that I also shipped Rui with his team manager. (in this series, the star player got with the manager instead of captain of the cheerleading squad)
Man, I miss this fandom.

What can I say? They were adorable in the book. They so earnestly wanted to help each other, even without knowing who the other person was, I couldn't help shipping them.

I don't know why, but Tim/Kon always gets related to Teddy/Billy.
Is it the human/alien thing? Is it because one of them always flips the fuck out when the other dies? ("These were his colors...") ("He's gone! What did you do to him!?")
