Ok, so I know I said a while ago I wouldn't start participating in all the ranting about House, especially not if it's ship-related, 'cause anyone has their own opinion. However, I changed my mind after stumbling across a few tweets from Greg Yaitanes and the discussion they created over at
iwatchforcuddy. Since this is not an issue of the (seemingly) neverending Huddys vs. Hamerons war-thingy I see no problem in sharing my thoughts.
Ok.. So I've been kinda busy w/ work these last days (..or more weeks..) which is why I only came to read this now. However, after reading it, I can't stop my cynical self from sharing my opinion even though it's probably not that much different from anyone elses. So, here you go..
#1: "if people are frustrated they care. if they don't like a character they care. if they are writing me they care. so often a fan telling us something they don't like is actually telling us how well something is working. for example if everyone hates lucas it tells us how strong the house and cuddy relationship is for people. in the end though we don't write scripts to fan desires since you can't please everyone."
"If people are frustrated they care. if they don't like a character they care. [...]"
Well, I will admit that - taken out of its context - this statement in fact makes sense. Of course people ranting about something on the show indicates they care [about what's going on]. In the show in general, with the characters, etc. - which naturally is a good thing for the creators, because it shows they did something that has peoples interest. I can say I'm w/ him so far.
However, as you may or may not noticed, I used the term "out of its context" - and for a reason, 'cause here's where Mr.Yaitanes major error in reasoning lies, for he tells us further "for example if everyone hates Lucas it tells us how strong the House and Cuddy relationship is for people." And that's where the wishful thinking starts. Because for the fans current anger to be a good sign in regard to Huddy it would have to be basically 1. about Cuddy being w/ anyone who's not House and (following 1.) enragment only amongst the Huddy shippers - which it is not. In reality, as a simple fact, even the none-Huddy-shippers hate Lucas. But why would they if we followed Mr.Yaitanes theory? Exactly, not because he is with Cuddy or she with him (yes, I'm saying here that for once this actually isn't about shipping anyone) but because the whole plot is created in a way that has to make even the most understandable viewer think "Okay, wait, what the heck? Can anybody explain to me why - of all people - she's dating a boytoy like him and acting like a lovesick puppy in the process?" Okay, that might be a bit harsh, but at least you get my point.
I mean, let's face it here: even with all her issues and stuff Cuddy is still a grown woman and one who has proven herself in the past to be very - even to - rational when it comes to relationships. After all, that's why she's not simply jumping into something with House in the first place, right? Because she sees the possible consequences, fears them even (or at least that's what I thought the writers wanted to make us believe until now). And yet, in the same breath, they make her go head over heels into this thing with Lucas seemingly w/o so much of a second thought that she even considers moving in w/ him after only a few weeks of being together. No offence meant, but one simply has to stop and ask themselves "What the f**k happend?" A question to which the answer's still pending down to the present day.
So, long speech made short: No, Mr.Yaitanes, we are not angry about Cuddy being with someone - anyone - but House. We, or at least I myself, are angry about a major change in a main characters behauviour (after six years, I might add) without even the slightest hint of a comprehensible reason (and I mean one better than "Well, she's into him"). And yes, I am frustrated and angry because I care about the show, but that does not - as you imply - show any 'greater plan' is working. In my opinion for the moment it only shows that the current storyline wasn't as well thought out as it should have been - and fans thinking that can't truly be a compliment for any show or a good thing for the ratings.
#2: "it's hard knowing what i know and take everyone being so upset so serious. just relax. trust."
Now, I am well aware that this statement should take some of the heat I felt over Tweet #1 away, but honestly it doesn't. Call me a cynic or maybe faithless for all I care, but somehow I find it rather hard to believe that TPTB gonna suddenly conjure up an explanation that will take away all of the bitter taste this plot leaves in my mouth. I, as an old pessimist, find it more likely to believe that they're simply gonna come up with some - in my eyes - insufficient plot twist again that gives only a half-hearted explanation which the expect us to just swallow. Wouldn't be the first time ever, would it? Doesn't make it any better though and it would definitely take away some of my joy in watching the show (as far as there even is any left right now).
#3: @GregYaitanes My problem w/it, besides finding Lucas annoying and worrying about Huddy, is that Cuddy seems like a different character. She just doesn't seem like herself anymore. I've never been annoyed by Cuddy and I have to say I'm really displeased with her.
@Shenanipants maybe that's the idea.
Since the above induction is basically what I was talking about before I won't take that up again here and simply concentrate on Mr.Yaitanes answer. I can even do that in one sentence: If that's the idea (and honestly I don't even want to imagine it was), it was a rather bad one as far as I see it. Staying w/ my theory that there can't be an explanation coming good enough to make all this go away, I really can't see how making one of the main characters annoying and untrue to her character as it was established over six years, can possibly lead to anything TPTB would find worth aiming for.
But then again, maybe I am just not imaginative enough.. and yes, I am saying this with an appropriate amount of irony.
