Charles, like Raven, finally managed to bring himself out of the mansion in short bouts. Most of his time since Erik left had been devoted to actually setting himself right. As best as he could, at least. He was eating more now, as well as trying to be more open with Alex and Sean, as difficult as it was. He still didn't sleep very well, but the nightmares about the day in Cuba were not going to go away for sometime, he felt. Only time would tell.

He had situated himself to sit out in the yard, against one of the trees. His wheelchair was beside him, an ever faithful companion, but he hated sitting in it all the time. His head was leaned back against the tree, eyes closed, with the PORTAL in his lap. It was a bit of a cat nap, though the sound of Raven's thoughts stirred him from it. Charles raised his head and looked down the small gravel pathway, expecting to find the blue skinned woman and found her fair skin and blond haired disguise instead.

Saying he was surprised was a bit of an understatement.

Well, now wasn't that a surprise. It looked like today was a good day for everyone to finally emerge from their depressing dens.

Raven's thoughts were obviously in a troubled whirl at the present moment given just who was on her mind, but the young woman still managed a small smile before approaching her brother. "Mind if I join you? It looks nice under there."

"Not at all, Raven. You don't even need to ask." Charles replied with a raised eyebrow.

He put his hands on the ground and shifted himself over. His legs dragged a little, but, there wasn't much he could do about that. Despite it, he offered her a smile and gave a pat to the grass beside him.

Raven plopped gracelessly onto the grass beside him, scooting over to press her slim shoulder against his, shooting a sly smile over at the same time. As great of distractions as everyone else was in this city, especially all of the new friends she had made, Charles would always bring a much better sense of peace to the girl than anyone else ever could. When he was around and in a good mood, all her worries could disappear and be put at ease while they were in conversation or just plain having fun.

"Good." She bumped against his side gently in a playful way. "I like to think of the Mansion like it is partially mine after all of my years here, so I will just include all of the lawn in that ownership too."

He chuckled at her playfulness. It was good to see her in a little better of a mood after Erik had left the city. He wanted to say she was taking it well, but her temperance said that he was entirely wrong on the matter. He tilted his head back and raised his eyebrows with a small smirk on his face.

"Then I suppose I'll need to get your permission as well as Sean and Alex's whenever someone could potentially move in." Charles noted. "You can have the lawn as long as you do not claim the cellar. I have a hard enough time keeping Alex out of it."

Though Erik was still on her mind (and would likely linger on for quite some time), Raven knew there was little point in pouting and crying until he eventually returned (which she was already assured he would). The young mutant really was trying her best now to get out in his absence and truly explore the city she's been thrown into. Wouldn't it be best for his return for her to be fully prepared and have all the information on his city that he needed?

With a genuinely content grin at her brother, the blonde leaned up against his side again, resting there this time.

"Well, he's free to shut the door and never come out again." Which should explain her feelings for Alex pretty damn accurately. "So that deal works well for me."

Charles moved his arm around his sister's shoulders, holding her close and protectively. There was a sigh and he moved his hand up and down her arm to be comforting, looking around the property that they had called home for so many years. It was September according to the time period of the city, and trees on the mansion's yard were slowly starting to change. No different colored leaves, but Charles knew what the grounds looked like through the seasons. By the end of the month they'd be into fall ( ... )

Raven allowed the man she called her brother to both hold her tight and press a comforting kiss to her head. This was normal behavior for them. Despite what had happened before with them in Cuba and the divide that had quickly been placed between them, it had only taken a few short weeks here to repair their relationship. And considering that the young woman now let him into her head somewhat? It could easily be said that they were even closer than before.

Raven leaned back against his touch, sighing.

"I know, I know. It's just difficult. Sean has been really okay with me here, but Alex doesn't seem happy with anything I do. But don't worry, I'll keep trying."

"Alex can be like that with everyone, Raven. It's not just you." Charles pointed out. Most of the time he and Alex weren't on the same page. "I don't expect the two of you to be friends... but it would be very nice if you could get along somewhat in case we ever need to work together again."

Charles simply nodded. He and Raven had grown close again, but Charles still knew that it was possible they'd part ways again. Either one of them could leave at a moment's notice, like Erik had, or they could find themselves on opposite sides again. He tried not to think about it.

"Really?" Because Raven has thought for the longest time that it was only her. As sad as it was too hear that Charles might be having trouble with the younger mutant as well, it was somewhat comforting to know that all of his aggression wasn't being thrust in her general direction.

"Don't worry so much, Charles. You should know me better than that. Especially if you have access to my head now." She threw him a sweet, secret smile at that. "No matter how much we may disagree, neither of us would let it interfere in a real situation." Or at least she certainly hoped not.

"But enough about that." There was absolutely point in prolonging a conversation like that one. "Today is too nice to waste on unpleasantness. I just want to have a nice time with you. It's been too long, don't you think?"

"Contrary to popular belief, I do not always say the right thing at the right time." Charles said, looking at her with a frown and eyebrows raised together. She knew that better than most. A smile still managed to work itself onto his face. "Yes, of course. There are far more pressing matters at the moment. Especially since this city is far more accepting of who we really are."

That made him chuckle, though, even if it was a bit forced. "Yes, quite. We haven't had much time since the entire adventure with Shaw started, have we? Which reminds me..." Charles kissed the side of her head and pulled his arm back, reaching up into his wheelchair. He scooped up the blankets in his hands, moving it to his lap. Whatever it was inside was still hidden.

"This is something you may be rather interested in."

Quite happy to leave all of that unpleasant conversation behind, Raven immediately perked up at the surprise, posture straightening as she leaned in closer to Charles.

"Oooh, a surprise? For me?" Her eyes practically dance in excitement. "What is it?"

"For everyone in the mansion. It was given to me, but if we share the mansion, I don't see why we can't share this." Charles said with a shrug and pulled back the blanket. Inside was an egg. He held it up in his hands for Raven to take. "That purple-cat that comes by sometimes? That is Helia. Apparently her species reproduces via eggs and she and her owner asked for me to take one."

A smile spread on his face. "While I wouldn't call it a pet, at least we'll have an animal of some sorts in the house. Considering Kurt would never let us have one."
