technological time wasting

i wonder how many people who are bored with their career have stayed in their jobs for longer than they would have done say, 10 years ago, because the opportunities for desk based time wasting are so much better these days? Ten years ago, short of reading the newspaper or staring at your colleagues, time wastage opportunities were severely limited. and clearly, whilst reading paper/staring, it was kind of obvious that you werent doing whatever it is you were paid to do. but now, well, thanks to the wonders of the internet and email, you can look like youre working on that vital report whilst actually you are emailing your pal sarah about how bored you are, but that very act keeps you sufficiently stimulated to believe that your job is ok, actually.

i ask because i sit next to a woman (well, child really, she's 24) who has been looking for alternative employ for seven months. she has, in that time, attended literally dozens of interviews. i think you can tell from her distinct lack of success in job hunting that she's actually not very good at what she does (or rather doesnt) do.

now, im not a naturally nosey person (alright, i am, but i think i hide it relatively well), but her monitor is angled straight towards me and i cant help but see what she's writing. and for the past five months, she has mostly been MSN messengering her pals, emailing her pals and booking holidays/looking for cottages to rent for new year's parties/looking up nice pubs in which to meet the pals she's been emailing.

you know you're getting old when stuff like this winds you up. and it really is winding me up. but then, like i said, ten years ago i would have been doing exactly the same thing. maybe thats it, maybe i am simply jealous that her scope for discreet time wasting is so much broader than mine was at her age. besides, she's finally managed to get a job offer, so she's shipping out in three weeks. i should really get on with my own work and stop farting around on the internet.
