So my friend Katey ( steelerswheel ) and I have made this great big long list of movies that we both need to see. Trust me, it's HUUUUGE. The last time we did an overnight and rented a bunch of movies: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz (both for Simon Pegg), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (for Matthew Gray Gubler and Wes Anderson), The Princess Diaries 2 (for Chris Pine), Smokin' Aces (Also for Chris Pine), and Star Trek: the Wrath of KHAAAAAAN. So our last venture was VERY successful and we really wanted to do it agian. so we did. we hit blockbuster and grabbed us a bunch of movies, our goal being to find a movie with each member of the Enterprise crew in it. We found a movie with Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, and Karl Urban, and others cause we wanted to see them. I shall do a brief review of each.
DOOM (for Karl Urban) : Okay. We were warned that this was an AWFUL movie. But we had decided that the Karl Urban of it all was worth the bad movie. But...it wasn't a bad movie. It was actually a very cool movie. KU was gooooorgeous, the monsters/aliens/demons were scary, the lines were funny, and that whole ten minute section where the movie was filmed exactly like gameplay made me squee. Now, I've never played the game, so im sure there are dedicated fans who are very against it. But I quite enjoyed it. And the Big Fucking Gun. And Karl Urban, lol. All in all, not a bad movie, and enough to make me not like dark corners anymore.
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (for Simon Pegg): I personally was expecting another one of Mr. Pegg's Brit comedy hilarity spectaculars like Shaun of the Dead, but HTLFAAP was actually a sort of light hearted romantic comedy about a hack writer who finds himself working for a bigshot celebrity magazine in NYC. Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst, Megan Fox (*gags*), Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges. It's cute, sweet, and has enough SPegg humor in it to keep your sides aching. Humor such as Simon's character killing Megan Fox's chihuahua. And Simon Pegg is just adorable, even when he's playing a classless, socially awkward, tacky, immature jackass.
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (for John Cho): Now here is a movie I expected to be akin to Austin Powers and Napoleon Dynamite. Stupid, ignorant, disgusting, inappropriate, tacky, and gross. And yeah, it was some of these things. But it was HILARIOUS. John Cho was an adorable underdog who had his own little "come into your own strength" subplot going on, Kumar was your typical loser who actually realized there was something he was good at, and the craziness that comes of their desperate, marijuana-induced desire to reach a White Castle for the perfect burger left us giggling at 3 in the morning. Giggling quite loudly, I might add. We also decided that Katey is the Kumar to my Harold. She's the one with no reservations who's laid back about life and common sensical. I'm the uptight one, focused on deadlines and worried about authority and sensitive about what people think. All in all, it was a good movie, though. And there's just something timeless about Neil Patrick Harris rubbing his hands over a naked girl's boobs and dancing to ridiculous hip hop while flying down the road in a stolen four door sedan.
Repo! The Genetic Opera (for the hell of it): Okay, if you're in to Sweeney Todd like movies, this is a good one for you. Made by the producers of Saw, it's gory and fabulously plot heavy. Basically, in the future there is an epidemic of organ failures, and this company Geneco rises from the chaos and finds a cure and establishes teh concept of payment plans for organ transplants. But if you fall behind on your payments, the ocmpany sends the Repo man to take the organ back. Violently. We were also surprised to find that it is, in fact, a musical. With good music, believe it or not. I really really really want teh soundtrack. And it had Sarah Brightman in it! It was well shot, well written, the gore was well placed (which is a big thing for me) and it had a good plot. It was very good. Just...don't eat any time before, during, or after it, el oh el.
Just My Luck (only, and I repeat ONLY, for Chris Pine): First off, I would like to say that I loathe Lindsay Lohan. I don't consider her overly burdened with an abundance of talent, and I don't consider her overly burdened with an abundance of looks. But this was a cute movie. If only it was a different lead. Katey and I yelled at her character the whole movie cuase she was just a dumb, selfish bitch, but Cpine's charrie Jake was ADORABLE. He was geeky and cute and cared for his little cousin and really really cared genuinely for people and believed in them. So he made the movie worthwhile. Basic concept: Jake (cpine) is very unlucky, and Ashley (lohan) is very lucky. they kiss at a party that Jake has snuck into to get a demo cd to this big music producer and Ashley's luck goes to Jake while Jake's unluck goes to AShley. His life gets better and hers falls apart. But he uses his luck purely for nonselfish reasons and ashley realizes after falling in love with jake and kissing him again and getting her luck back that she doesn't deserve it and he does. so she gives it back. and more kissing ensues. its cute. Just...i hate hate hate lindsay lohan.
Charlie Bartlett (for Anton Yelchin): We actually saw this one last summer, but it was good, we liked it, and it's ANTON YELCHIN and ROBERT DOWNEY JR. so you know, worth it. It screams to my inner eccentric teenager and its just a really good movie. Like, it's almost impossible to describe. Charlie is a delinquent, rich teen who's been kicked out of numerous private schools and finds himself in a public school. After a run in with bullies, he makes a business arrangement with the bully. Charlie, put on Ritalin by his family's psychiatrist, decides to sell the meds to the kids at a school party, and he and the bully Murphy realize this is a brilliant idea. What's starts as a psycho drug pushing business in the bathroom at school ends up a counseling center for the misunderstood teens and Charlie ends up a local hero, much to the chagrin of the overworked, underappreciated, alcoholic principal (downey). Further to the principal's frustrations, Charlie starts dating the man's daughter Susan. Events ensue (i won't give major spoilers) and charlie helps the principal realize what he's missing with his daughter and the principal helps charlie understand that popularity and being well liked is not what's important in life. It's knowing what to do with that power. Good, deep movie. Cute lead. Cute supporting lead. All things are good. And I just wanna put Anton Yelchin in my pocket so I can cuddle him at random times of the day. ssoooo yeah.
All in all, the sleepover was successful. Great movies. Another new Rp for us to play with our pretties in. Staying up until 4 in the morning. All good, all good.
