I'm back from the northeast, and it was lovely :)

I drove my mom up to NYC on monday, and we saw Parsons. it was hard to get a sense of the school because we only went to an informational session, but I didn't like that it had no campus. I don't think I'm really a city kind of person, and this trip definitely affirmed that. we went walking and shopping in the Village--a lot of vintage shops and some big brand stores too--and then came back to the hotel to find that they hadn't reserved us a non-smoking room! I guess I'm pretty spoiled: no one really smokes anymore in the district, so I've never had to deal with a smoky bar/restaurant/room/etc. we almost had to stay in a very bad-smelling room, but luckily everything worked out okay :)
the next morning we went shopping in the garment district. I didn't find anything I loved, but it was still fun. overwhelming, but fun all the same! then we took the subway up to Brooklyn to see Pratt. it was sort of a mixed bag: the campus and facilities were great, but I got this really weird, uncomfortable feeling being there. it was like I wasn't artsy enough, or something. after the tour and meeting an admissions counselor, we went back to the city, where we did more shopping (but no buying, lol).
on wednesday, we went to see FIT and did more shopping in the garment district.
I don't think art school is for me, based on the schools I saw on this trip. initially, I thought I might be able to do something I loved (sewing) for a living, and maybe get a job in fashion, but the industry seems so fickle and catty. it wasn't a perfect fit, I guess.
we went to a seder at my mom's cousin's house outside the city on wednesday night, and then drove up into Connecticut for the night.
on thursday, we drove up to Hadley, Massachusetts, and saw Amherst College. oh my gosh, I loved it! the campus was gorgeous, as were the facilities and dorms! it felt like Hogwarts: the dorms had common rooms and they kept calling freshmen "first years"! the only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the open curriculumn, where you completely design your own major from scratch. I don't know if I'm independent enough to handle it. and it's so hard to get into Amherst, too ...
on friday, we saw Smith College (beautiful campus, but I don't think I could handle an all-girls school), and then drove back down into Westport, Connecticut, where my sister was staying with some good family friends. we spent a relaxing day there on saturday (beading and going out on the river), and then we drove home last night.

*phew* it was a whirlwind trip, and it's good to be home, even though that means lots of homework and school on tuesday (yuck). ack, and ACT scores on the 18th and SAT scores on the 24th!
I went for a run this morning (first one since the season ended in november!), and then did work. so far I've written an essay, an outline for an essay, and an outline for the AP World exam (I only got 8000 b.c.e-600 c.e. done ... ), and now it's time for dinner.
yum, tagine chicken :)
