Today is a muddy, rainy day...so much so that I had to dig out my rain boots because the puddles surrounding my house are pretty deep.
Yesterday was Easter, and it was the first one I've ever spent away from home. I asked my mom if the Easter bunny knows where I live now, and she said that she thinks he does. Then I asked if he could send money instead of candy, and she said she would talk to him.
I would normally always vote money over candy, but even more so right now. I've been so broke this term, but it's mainly because I'm going to NYC every other weekend for my street photography class. Saturday we went to ICP (International Center for Photography) to see a Larry Clark exhibit, which was fantastic (Eric - you should look him up, I think you'd like him a lot. Also, Martin Parr) as well as the Met to see a Diane Arbus exhibit. We then went to Times Square to take pictures of tourists and such - it's overwhelming, but TS is such a good location if you're looking for tons of people. I stand at a street corner, looking like I'm waiting to cross, a crowd forming behind me and across the street. I point my camera upwards and focus on a building or a sign so that I don't appear to be looking at anyone across the street. Then, when the light changes I stay still on my corner as the other people approach. I keep my camera up, but then flick it down really quickly the capture people's faces as they pass me. I'm hoping these come out well...this is only one of the many approaches I've been using lately. Others involve pretending to be lost and talking on the cell phone while I'm actually shooting from the hip (holding my camera limply at my side, but focusing manually with one hand and angling my hips to take pictures without looking through the viewfinder), or hiding. It's like being a spy. I could stop and ask people if I could take their picture, which I am very comfortable with doing, but for now I'm having too much fun devising ways to take pictures unseen. In Central Park there was an Easter Eggstravaganza, but the light was so poor when we got there that I really didn't take many pictures at all. I did, however, do the electric slide. I've liked taking pictures in Chinatown the best so far, but I'd really like to check out Spanish Harlem and some of the other ethnic areas.
There's something I need, but I don't know what.
