Shik Do Rak, Koreatown, L.A.
Yuri's friend Renz (who just got hitched this September) told her that he and his new bride recently cooked their first meal together. Something simple for young newlyweds who've just left the roost. Soy chicken, rice: she smiled to herself about this, tenderly amused by her friends, since she and I have been cooking together at least four or five nights a week for the last two months!
Since we share a spirit of adventure, we try new recipes in addition to our own old stand-bys. I've made a French Onion Soup (add some brandy while it simmers) and my adobong manok, and she's made her curry with mouth-wateringly tender potatoes, carrots, onions, and beef or chicken, simmered for eight hours in a crock pot while she works and I sleep, and also whipped up a delicious cold noodle and mabo tofu combo (combination! *wink*).
Occasionally, though, we indulge in some fine-dining out on the town. It's a good way to keep in touch with friends (though we do want to invite them over some time for some ribs, some brats, and/or some home-made shabu-shabu ).
On Wednesday, for example, we took a friend from out of town (way out: try Yokohama!) to a Vietnamese joint in San Gabriel, courtesy of Tommy, Yuri's sister's beau, who ordered a 7-course meat sampler for us in his mother tongue (note to Asian food afficionados: the Vietnamese dessert drink (cheb mao?) is just like halo halo).
And on Friday, we met
in_dig_ent and the notorious K. at Shik Do Rak, where we're rapidly becoming regulars. And indiggy-dawg ordered for us in his mother tongue.
On top of that, Saturday found us squeezing in some finger sandwiches between Yuri's talented sibs' joint violin/viola recital in J-town (15 year old Alex & 17 year old Eric knocked me out with their Bach, Brahms and Mozart) and an L.A. Chamber Orchestra concert at the Alex Theatre (go, Rameau! who knew? and rock-chalk Bach (C.P.E., that is), David Shostac, mein flute soloist), then grubbing down afterward at the new In 'n Out Burger on Brand Ave. in Glendale.
What a perfect, perfect girl: we can get sushi on a Sunday night -- ネギハマと甘エビ -- or make a breakfast feast for four on a Sunday morning. It's love, food, and more love! (and then maybe a little antacid to aid the digestive process... ;D)
