Travelling around Japan pre- or post-Worldcon

I'm planning to go to next year's world science fiction con, Nippon2007 in Yokohoma, & since I'm not sure if I'll ever get to Japan again I'm planning to do some pre- or post-con touring, even though it's not very conveniently timed for me (i.e., in the middle of teaching). Still, I'd be an idiot to dash to Japan & back!

I'd really like to travel around with fannish (or other) friends, but the official fan tours on the homepage are too pricey for me, plus too big & flash (in coaches & quite good hotels). (Though if I could afford the price I probably could force myself to tolerate the flash ;-) )

I'm currently exploring other options (including going it alone or going for a small group tour such as with Intrepid Travel), but would love to know what others are doing, & maybe even find myself some tourmates.
