Deathwatch

Tonight I stand Deathwatch for a hamster. Yes a hamster. And is, indeed, a sad and somber sight. Although the youngest of all the hamsters my roommate has had over the years, Missy is most certainly at death's door. It's a bitter, grotesque moment for me- I'm the only one in the room who knows how bad it truly is. I'm the only one with the stomach to check the blood-soaked backside of a hamster whose innards are gradually spilling out for lord only knows what reason. Apparently it's common. I wouldn't know- hamsters aren't my thing, although I love Missy, who's more like a peppy little dog than a hamster. Closet-sized, so she can be hidden in a tote in our dorm room. And now I have to bear alone the fear, uncertainty, and unpleasantry of watching her waddle, stumbling over her intestines and tail, for her tail has come slightly and now protrudes at an angle impossible for a hamster's tail to reach.

It may be absurd, but it is all the more tragic and true. So, I send all my positive energy to my dearest roommate, and do what I can to make the night pass quickly.

story, unpleasant, hamster
