Floating idea - X 'the Redeemer'.
Idle story thought that came up when passing a church on the way home yesterday:
Church of (name) the Redeemer. Religion / sect / whatever where members only join after they have done something truly terrible with their lives, and work for the church / in the god's name until they are declared to be absolved
* Would work quite well in a merit / karma type based system.
* Some things would, presumably, never be able to be completely forgiven by the church, but whether they wouldn't accept someone of that status, or if they would work to make it not so bad, would be up to implementation.
* Very likely has a holy warrior / mercenary / vengence aspect to it.
* Potentially fun morality to play with.
* Very fun to screw up entirely into something dreadful.
Doesn't currently fit into any of my active settings. Hmm.
