Bits of Random

If you've been following my journal for a long time, you've seen my flails about this guy I know, John. He's unbelievably cute, we like all the same things, listen to all the same music, and are pretty much soulmates. Well I asked him to my prom the best way ever - it involved leaving a little box in his mailbox that had a Pokeball inside with 'Go to my prom with me? :)' on a little paper inside the ball. Aaaaaaaaand HESAIDYESHESAIDYESHESAIDYESHESAIDYEEEES. :DD

~In other news~, I have a bit of a rant here.
What seems to be the go-to place for girls and women today? If you don't know what to get a girl as a gift, gift cards to this store tend to be the norm. At least, almost every girl I know frequents Victoria's Secret. I, for one, won't step foot in the place. The only piece of clothing I own from Victoria's Secret is a pair of pajamas my mom bought for me as a Christmas gift.

Almost everything about this store unsettles me. It seems to highlight every sexist issue that exists today in the media and society. Look at the cover of a Victoria's Secret magazine, and it could easily be a Playboy or porn. Thumb through the magazine, and it's all stick-thin models in little lacy undergarments. They're sporting underwear that barely covers the essentials, and push-up bras that are all guaranteed to 'Instantly add 2 cup sizes!' It seems like they're trying to seduce you into buying the products. Is this really what a working, every-day woman is supposed to look like? If this sets the precedent, then the only kind of beauty that exists is a size 0 waist, nice big breasts, and a good ass - and the last two should be on display as much as possible.

A Victoria's Secret catalog and the pictures displayed in the stores are photographed to be sexually exciting. Even for a store that should be targeting women in their advertising, this makes it seem like the advertisements are more so reaching out to men. The advertisements have the kind of women any straight man would fall over himself for. And then with these kinds of tiny, scantily-clad women on display as a model, women come to shop and search for the kinds of clothes that make men happy. Even in a store for womens's undergarments, where women are supposed to be able to shop for comfortable underwear that fit well, it boils down to pleasing men. Women look through the magazine and think they need to look like that. They need the bra that doubles their chest size, and the thong that their boyfriend is sure to love.

The fact that most of my friends and girls at my school shop regularly at Victoria's Secret and sport the Pink brand proudly on their apparel really concerns me. When did this attitude become popular? When did skimpy and sexy become the look every girl needs? When did slutty become the norm?

/I am in no way trying to say anything bad about people who do like to shop there. They do totally have some great bras and shit. I just like to rant sometimes.
