Cas, Dean, Art, and CAPSLOCK
So I just read something that made my art history nerd loving heart ABSOLUTELY CASPLODE WITH LOVE. NO REALLY, GUYS. Love is not even the right word here. I'm like, so happy right now that I feel like I'm either going to cry or throw up. BECAUSE IT IS JUST THAT AWESOME.
I read this amazing, wonderful, achingly beautiful article and I can't even begin to describe the feelings that I am feeling. HOLY OMFG. Be still my heart!
Lucifer Rising has a always been a favorite of mine. For obvious reasons -- the Dean angst, Cas and Dean's breakup, Zach's bossness, Ruby's monologue, and the set design of the Green Room. It is undeniably lovely, and come on, I eat this stuff up. I knew some of the art already -- The Swing, the Roccoco bronzes, the Netherlandish apocalyptic/chaotic style, and of course those Claudian landscapes. I found this article while searching for a place to buy a print of Archangel St. Michael Killing the Dragon by Josse Liefernixe, c.1500.
It will look beyond awesome in the dorm, I think. It just so happens that I have a kickass gold vintage frame (which I found on the curb at the Jersey Shore, with a broken mirror inside it. Yes I did bamfly kick out the glass and take it home with me). It actually looks a lot like how it's framed in the episode, too. OMG squee!
But reading the article, having a resource listing all the titles and artists of the works in the room, and seeing the author make all these connections about the art, subtext, and characterization of this episode, is just so overwhelmingly wonderful. It's gorgeous. And perfect. And every other lovely word EVER. What got me the most -- joy beyond tears, really -- was the revelation that St. Michael slaying the Dragon is also the coat of arms of Castiel, Switzerland. Which indicates that Castiel is on Dean's side. Cas will fight in Dean's name!
I like, cannot even get over this. REALLY. SPN, your beauty and complexity ever surprises me. Castiel, your SHEER AWESOMENESS ONLY GETS MORE AWESOME AND INCREDIBLE AND UNBELIEVABLE IN ITS AWESOMENESS. DEAR GOD CAN WE JUST LOOK AT THAT COAT OF ARMS AND TELL ME THAT DEAN AND CAS ARE NOT THE BESTEST TEAM AND/OR PAIRING IN THE HISTORY OF FOREVER AND EVER?
This is mindblowing. My mind is blown. My heart weeps in awe. Show, I love you a hundred times more. Who even knew it was possible? It was a close call among other contenders On the Head of a Pin, The Rapture, and Dark Side of the Moon, but this has basically forever cemented Lucifer Rising as my favorite episode of all time. Never will I ever love anything more than this one.
Anyway, this is what happens when classical art overlaps with SPN. I am reduced to a quivering heap of squee and casplosion. OMG, I CANNOT EVEN TAKE THIS. DIE DIE DIE BEAUTY BEAUTY BEAUTY DEAN DEAN CAAAAAAAAS.
