Japan Trip: Kyoto (Hotel situation)

Jun 12, 2006 14:41

Oddly enough, even though Yuxi loved Mount Koya, he couldn't wait to leave the next morning. I'm surprised since leaving Mount Koya meant we had to check into the sketchy hostel of Kyoto. In the end, we still left pretty early.

We got to Kyoto and the station was really really big. It's connected to department stores, a hotel, plazas, etc. Just a huge station. We were told to ask for direction to the hostel when we get to the station and that's what we did. Yuxi and Josh went to the visitor centre (which they said looked really cool) and started leading us in a direction. The map wasn't the best so it took us a while to find it. We walked down this "street" (it was more like an alley) and weren't sure that it was the place. We tried asking them inside but the person we talked to didn't speak English so we waited and waited then left. We eventually went back and there were people that did speak english and told us we were at the right place... sorta. So, I told you in a previous post that we would need to take our showers in the hotel "across the street". Well, this was it.

The hostel we were to stay at didn't open for another 40 minutes or so. We sat around and played card games for a while. Finally, we went in search of our actual accommodations. It was actually farther than "across the street". It was across 3 streets but whatever. It's not hard to get to. Just a little scary in the dark because of the street that seems more like an alley. Thankfully, the guys were willing to walk me over and back when I wanted to take a shower. That made it less scary.

The room was incredibly small. hahaha. The Air conditioning/fan provided in the rooms did not work at all. It was getting rather hot in Japan at this time and the fan would have been greatly appreciated. Yuxi and I had a window with a fire escape so we could at least get some air in. But we closed it at night in case weirdos came by. It was interesting trying to plan out how to set up the beds for sleeping. hehehe. not enough room for our beds, bags, and TV and little table with "chairs". We somehow managed. The room smelled a bit too...

Oh, speaking of smells (hehehe), the bathroom smelled really really bad. okay, maybe not THAT bad but it was bad. It wasn't like a garbage truck or the sewer or an animal farm, but it smelled. That was rather unpleasant.

The place was just really small in general. Even though I said I was up for the experience of living in this type of housing, I was glad to no longer be in that place after 3 nights. We moved over to a hotel that was much bigger and cleaner and more relaxing. it was also fairly convenient for the stuff we wanted to do during those later days in Kyoto. It did create one problem. There was no washing machine. So I had to hand-wash some stuff for a few days. I should have done the laundry earlier..... oh well.

So, that's the hostel drama. =)
