"I remember." Rose smiles and dips her head as her uncle's hands move through her hair. Percy's fingers are slender, clever. He does everything with precision. Her braid will be tight. It won't pull.

"You never did this when I was small." Rose's voice is as tight as her braid, strung thin like a promise before it breaks. Her thighs tremble across his lap, two fingers to the knuckle inside of her.
"Never," he agrees, and though she is grown now, she will rock and rock and rock and he will hold her like a baby.
