Hmm, I think my mum used to use something called Easy Share with her old camera. I'll ask her what kind of camera it was and how it worked etc.
I wish I had more of a clue but, with the camera I had a loan of, I just put the card into a card reader which plugged into the USB port and the computer recognised it. There wasn't anything to install.
Well, the one my mum gave me a loan of is about the size of a cassette and has slots for 4 different types of memory card.
When you connect it to the computer it comes up as extra disk drives (one for each slot) and you just go into the one you're using to access the photos. I don't think they're that expensive.
